At Pythagoras Academy we have 4 house teams named after local trees. They are Birch, Arbutus, Oak and Maple. Students earn house points for their team by showing gratitude, respect, open-mindedness, open-heartedness and wonder. The winning team celebrated this week with an ice cream party!

Students in grades 4 to 7 intentionally selected and arranged artistic elements, processes, materials and tools to create beautiful paper-mache masks, inspired by a variety of different cultures. Children had the opportunity to create their masks collaboratively using ideas from inquiry and experimentation, while they discussed relationships between different cultures, time periods and art forms. They then developed technical skills using mixed media, including acrylic paints, paper-mache, cardboard and drawing symmetrical forms.

The Grade 1 teachers and students took advantage of a break in the clouds to head outside with their Wonder Wagon to explore. They discovered worms, beautiful stones, slippery mud and deep puddles. Led by their questions and curiosity they created nature scenes and shared their learning with their friends and families on Seesaw.

To make the most of the beautiful fall days, the kindergarten students at Pythagoras Academy headed out into the school grounds and the surrounding area with one of our 2 new Wonder Wagons. These wagons were generously funded by our Pythagoras Academy Parent Organization and are filled with everything that the students and teachers might need to explore, discover and wonder about the natural world, including magnifying glasses, sit spots, clipboards, buckets, and other tools. The students searched for signs of fall and shared their observations and excitement with their friends and teachers. These hands-on experiences in kindergarten and grade 1 enrich an inquiry into the natural cycle of the seasons.

This year at Pythagoras Academy, instead of visiting the pumpkin patch, we brought the pumpkin patch to the school! Our first annual PA Pumpkin Patch was a great success as every class had the opportunity to visit with their cohort and choose the perfect pumpkin. Students and staff were encouraged to dress up as farmers for the day and the sunny weather, the crisp fall air and the smiles of the children made it an occasion to remember. Students were excited to take their pum...pkins home with them to prepare for Halloween, while teachers all chose a pumpkin to use for inquiry-led explorations during the week leading up to Halloween. Classes will be engaged in math activities, they will examine pumpkin attributes and life-cycles and participate in art-inspired pumpkin decoration and carving activities. This fun event brought together the whole school to build our sense of community and to create a new tradition.

On May 25, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students enjoyed a live, virtual, visit from a local artist, illustrator and author! Roz MacLean, an award winning illustrator, took students through her illustration process, while intertwining cross curricular objectives in mathematics, social studies, language arts and visual arts. Pythagoras Academy students embraced this learning style and found immense value in the innovative workshop. The workshop made the arts tangible, even during this... intangible time of COVID-19. Students created their own art pieces, focusing on authentic questions and challenges like, "What problems do you want to tackle when you grow up?" and "What are the superheroes in your life?" Their drawings and thought processes, infused by classical drawing skills and focused discussion, demonstrated impressive creative thinking! Thank you to Ms. Bolt and Ms. Dipa for organizing this virtual art workshop and Roz MacLean for joining us!

The Pythagoras Academy community is so grateful for hardworking essential service workers that have been helping us to stay safe during this pandemic. PA students brainstormed ways they could express their gratitude and share some love with the communities they live in. Students chose to express their appreciation in many different ways; for example, painting kindness rocks, hanging up hearts and signs in their windows, writing inspirational messages on the sidewalk with chalk, cheering healthcare workers at 7 pm, and writing letters of gratitude. We hope this video brings a smile to your face! Even though we need to stay at home right now, we are not alone! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WiZ9vhIg48

Grade 2 students had a fabulous trip to Science World. Students first participated in a workshop about solids, liquids and gases and how they change. On Wednesday, February 26th, we celebrated Pink Shirt Day at Pythagoras Academy. This year’s theme was Lift each other up. Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against bullying, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. It is now a day when people come together by wearing pink shirts to school or work to show they are against bullying and try to cultivate more kindness and empathy along the way. At Pythagoras Academy, students atten...ded the grade one Pink Shirt Day Assembly, displayed kind words in the main entrance, got their picture taken at the photo booth, participated in Pink Day activities in their classrooms, and received their License to be Kind. On Pink Shirt Day, Pythagoras students and staff proudly wore their pink shirts to show we will take a stand to ensure we all feel safe, valued and respected. https://www.pinkshirtday.ca

Last month, Grade 7/8 students went on ADST field trip to Roboplanet. Students explored different programming platforms (VEX, Mindstorms, WeDo 2.0, RoboMaster and Drones), built and tested different kinds of robots, wrote code using multiple programming languages (Java, Blocks and Python) and discovered the differences between machines and robots. Students had an opportunity to solve different programming challenges, design their own robots, test them and make changes to improve their performance. One of the Grade 7 students said that this was the most exciting field trip ever because he was able to try so many cool devices and robots!
