TCM case of the week: Injuries throughout the years can take a heavy toll on the hips on some people. With this particular client, the entire region surrounding the greater trochanter was tight bilaterally with a proliferation of matted and lumpy fascia. Treatment started with application of oil and sliding of a cup up and down both sides of the erector spinae muscles from the shoulders leading down to the sacrum. ... Second, five stationary cups were applied to the right hip surrounding the greater trochanter. These cups were left active for 15 minutes. From a modern neurophysiological perspective, these stationary cups not only benefit the local sites but also, via a crossover mechanism, transfer to the left side. Interestingly, two and a half thousand years ago the Chinese noted the same healing advantage. Next, electro-acupuncture was provided on 6 hip points (two of them labelled in picture). Finally, sliding cupping was performed again, exquisitely slowly, down the posterior and lateral fascial pathways on the leg to release and correct the abundance of indurated tissue along both margins. After treatment, patient got up from the table overjoyed and said the hips felt the best they had for a more than a year. Adhesions form and tighten and contract between folds of fascia. Collagen is laid down in any area where there is damage followed by resultant healing, so these areas of retracted fascia could form anywhere there has been damage. Cupping exerts an influence on indurations at the surface, breaking down adhesions between the folds of fascia. The result: fascia and muscle sheaths are no longer contracted, which enables the muscles to pull evenly and cleanly. Consider therapeutic cupping, guasha and acupuncture by Tom, our Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner. Available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.

YES, we're still OPEN! Although Peel will be in lockdown, our healthcare services are essential services so we will be open to continue to serve our clients' needs. In fact, we will be starting extended hours this week where we offer physiotherapy services on Monday and Wednesday evenings as well! PLEASE be safe and contribute to helping bring the numbers down. We ask you to also support our local businesses (now and in the upcoming months) which have huge restrictions placed on them or have to close down completely for the time being.

Interferential current therapy (IFC) Definition: the stimulation made by the interception of two electrical mediums of varying frequencies that work together to successfully stimulate large impulse fibres. These frequencies interfere with the pain transmission messages at the spinal cord level. Combined with heat, hands on therapy, postural changes and exercises, IFC can help eliminate pain and return a patient to the activities they enjoy.

Consider Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Products to help improve or eliminate your condition. Studies suggest that acupuncture stimulates the release of the body’s natural painkillers and affects areas in the brain involved in processing pain. Results from a number of studies suggest real acupuncture may help ease types of pain that are often chronic, such as low-back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis/knee pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. It also may help reduce the frequency... of tension headaches and prevent migraine headaches. For more information, call our TCM practitioner, Tom Kiroplis, at 905-450-7870. Chinese herbal products have been studied for many medical problems, including stroke, heart disease, mental disorders, and respiratory diseases (such as bronchitis and the common cold), and a national survey showed that about one in five Canadians use them. Consider a TCM consultation. If you have questions, email us at [email protected].
