Artisan Spotlight Emery-rose Assiniboine For the exhibit Powwow! Ohcîwin The Origins, currently on display at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery (MAG), curators and creators Patrick Mitsuing and Marrisa Moccasin and the team at the MAG worked with a diverse team of Indigenous Artistans from Western Canada and the US to collaborate on seven full dance regalia. We are excited to share with you our first artisan spotlight highlighting Emery-rose Assiniboine who created all the ...cloth work on display for the dances. A dancer’s regalia carries meaning, respect and love, and the cloth work that Emery-rose has crafted conveys all of these to the viewer. ABOUT Emery-rose Assiniboine is a Dakota and Plains Cree artist, seamstress, student and mother. She is from the Dakota Nation of Manitoba as well as the Neekaneet Cree Nation of Southern Saskatchewan. She has been designing and creating beadwork with her grandmothers since she was 12 years old. She completed her first fully beaded women's traditional top at the age of 21 yrs old. She has continued to create her own regalia since then. Emery-rose is the founder of EAssiniboine Designs which specializes in Indigenous wear that ranges from regalia to beadwork. Learn more about Emery-rose on our blog: https://bit.ly/30AFQ5S Follow Emery-rose on social media: E.Assiniboine Designs Powwow! Book your visit at https://RedDeerMuseum.as.me/Galleries Each regalia on display has elements created by at least four artisans who contributed to its making. These artisans have worked for years at their craft, learning from others, and participating in powwows. Working with the Mitsuings, the artisans incorporated designs and meanings of importance to themselves in the creation of the regalia. Powwow Times
