Hi all Just got a notice from the church. I guess the socially responsible thing to do is hold off on classes until the church opens again. Keep practicing at home and feel free to reach out to me with any questions or resource material. ... I'll be in touch. Stay safe. Scot

How is everyone doing? It sounds like we are getting close to training again, avoiding push hands and other contact. The following is a link to a CBC article explaining phase 4 which we would fall into. Stay safe out there. See you soon. https://www.cbc.ca//sports-saskatchewan-coronavirus-1.5609

Jian/Straight Sword Workshop will be held Saturday 9am - 11am. Cost will be $20 Swords will be available to be used for the class... Meihuaquan Straight Sword Basics. In Chinese martial arts, the study of the straight sword (jian) is usually recognized as most difficult to learn. High-level mental and physical proficiency in the use of the jian was required to effectively wield this comparatively slender weapon. Sword training emphasizes precise mechanical alignments and coordination, mental focus, and special attention to simultaneously nurturing the body’s internal qi, or internal energetic state of the body. Straight sword training methods remain widely practiced throughout China by both young and old as a time-proven method for improving mental and physical health. The meihuaquan approach to jian training is straightforward. Basic movements of the sword are learnt, after which we learn several choreographed sequences before learning how to connect the techniques in an improvised fashion. Training proceeds at a relatively slow pace that allows the practitioner to nurture movement in a relaxed state of mind. Swordplay techniques align the limbs in relation to the body in motion and emphasize the union of concentration and physical exercise. Physical exercises take place within a mental environment of stillness. This fluid, improvised training method leads to enhanced full- body flexibility, leg strength, and an increased range of motion in the shoulder joints, wrists, neck, hips and ankles. Straight sword training is characterized by relaxed, fluid, yet imposing movement that enlarges one’s presence and spirit (shen) and coordinates the mind and intent (yi) together with motion. This develops engaged relaxation and exerts a transformational effect on the body-mind connection. The workshop techniques will comprise the foundation for free-form training and help reach a training goal: self-directed free-form staff practice arranged according to the flow of one's 'qi' energetic condition, and embodying a meditative quality. This type of training has the effect of creating a staff workout that leaves you energized, coordinated, mentally engaged, and stronger. This unrestrained approach is a foundation staff training method in Meihuaquan and is, generally, unlike the training methods of other forms of martial arts. Meihuaquan's approach to training shares many similarities to the way jazz musicians first learn basic methods, then improvise in an unconstrained flow. SEMINAR CONTENT: - Introduction of swordplay and its beneficial effects on mental and physical well being. - A prearranged swordplay routine from the ancient art, Meihuazhuang, will be taught. - The graceful, gentle movements of the jian make it suitable for practitioners of all ages. - The techniques are adaptable to practitioners of other styles of Chinese martial arts. - Each person will progress according to their own ability.
