Saw a few flakes out there today (snowflakes! ) which means it's time for winter tires! If you have old tires lying around, please recycle them. It's EASY - take them to any local garage or store that sells tires. There is no charge to drop them off. However, due to limited storage space, there is a drop-off limit of five tires. Tires are processed at TRACC in Minto, and made into new rubber products like livestock mattresses for dairy operations across North America an...d overseas, rubber gaskets for use in manufacturing, noise and shock suppression materials, bases for road construction signs and bark mulch. FYI - Commercial operators, or anyone with a large number of tires for recycling, should contact Recycle NB at 1-888-322-8473. You can also visit their website for all info on tire recycling and other programs! recyclenb.com

Don't Trash It - Smash It! The Town of Hartland is holding their first ever "Pumpkin Smash" event on Nov 7&8 . Bring your pumpkins for organic disposal! No need for pumpkins going to landfill (which creates methane gas, which contributes to climate change). You can also compost your pumpkins at home, break up and spread in your gardens, donate to a local farmer, or take into the woods for animals to enjoy. Happy Halloween!!

Tuesdays Tip RECEIPTS - the ugly truth! Fact - most receipts from major chains are made of thermal paper, which cannot be recycled in our region. Please do not put any receipts in your blue bin. ... Fact - thermal paper is shiny, smooth and coated with heat-sensitive dyes and developers. The paper changes colour with heat so no ink is needed. Fact - a large percentage of thermal papers are actually coated in a nasty chemical called BPA (Bisphenol A) WHAT CAN YOU DO?? 1. Refuse a receipt 2. Ask for an e-receipt. 3. If you work in a store and handle receipts all day, ask management if they can switch to BPA-free paper (unless they already have, which is great!) 4. If you have a stack of receipts at home (ok, I am guilty!) please put them out with your trash. 5. If you shred receipts, they should still go into your trash and not with other shredded papers that can be recycled.

Tuesday's Tip Old playing cards! When you've worn them out (congrats!) do you recycle or toss? Sadly, toss. Cards are made from specially-prepared card stock that are COATED to make dealing and handling faster & easier (some of us need all the help we can get ). So, they can't be recycled as a single-stream paper item. Thanks!

Reposting our Zone 2-3-4 recycling schedule .. there is confusion out there today Recycling starts during the first FULL week of the month .. not the first day of the month. So NEXT WEEK for Carleton County LSDs West (red). Three easy ways you will know whats happening: 1. Refer to this schedule first 2. See our recycling reminders that we post each Friday for the following week... 3. Download the free Recycle Coach App for weekly collection reminders (garbage and recycling) based on your address! Last but not least, call 276-3610x201 or message us if you need any help.

MYTHBUSTING Monday - Biodegradable vs. Compostable. Biodegradable simply means that an item will break down in nature ..eventually! However, this term is a bit misleading because a biodegradable item could break down in 6 months or in hundred years... Compostable items must break down in a single composting cycle. The outcome of the compost must be non-toxic and safe for the environment. So this is definitely the better option!... Make sure to read your labels! Not all compostable items are safe for "home" composting, and need to be composted in industrial facilities (which we dont have in our region). But they are still a better choice because they will break down safely and quickly even if they are sent to the landfill.

Tuesdays Tip Recycling vs. Wishcycling! Have you ever put something youre uncertain about in your blue bin HOPING that it might get recycled? We wish that was the case, but its not. Please only place accepted items in your blue bin. When in doubt, throw it out OR ask us if youre unsure. The "What CAN Go In My Bin" list is on the back of your schedule, and on our website.

Flyers.. a hot topic - people love them or hate them! We love them for recycling, but we dont love the BAGS they come in. Put your flyers (clean, dry, intact) in the blue bin, but please throw the bag out first. It messes up the sorting and the whole package might get tossed out, which is a waste of good newspaper that can be recycled. Thanks!

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DAYS are coming up on October 17/18. Lots of common items are hazardous waste and should not be thrown out or dumped out. Look for labels that are marked as corrosive, toxic, flammable or poisonous. Safely store your items until a collection day ... Flammable liquids: Store preferably outside in a metal cabinet or in an unheated area. Never store near an open flame or spark. Flammable liquids include gasoline, camp stove fuel, paint thinner and l...amp oil. Corrosive materials: Store in a place such as a plastic tub or tray where the product cant spill out if the container leaks. Examples of corrosive materials are drain cleaners, bleaches and acids. All household hazardous waste: Store out of the reach of children and pets . In some cases, a label may recommend not storing one product with another, so watch for that. THANK YOU!!

WVRSC 29.01.2020

Tuesdays Tip Mythbusting! Recycling in our region is and has been operating as usual, so please continue recycling! FACTS ... Save the dates, and save your hazardous waste to bring to one of these free events (for residents only - no industrial or commercial waste). This will be a drive-through service. You will remain in your vehicle, pop your trunk, and items will be taken out by members of our local fire departments. Examples of hazardous waste - fluorescent light bulbs, old/unused pool chemicals, nail polishes, pesticides, propane tanks & cylinders, drain & oven cleaners, glues & adhesives, sta...ins & varnishes, aerosols, cleaning products. PAINT, BATTERIES, MOTOR OIL, ELECTRONICS - these can be taken for recycling ALL YEAR, so dont wait for one of these events to dispose of these items. Our website has info. Any questions? Let us know!

WVRSC 24.12.2019

Morning!! Weve noticed a number of households in our region using their blue carts for garbage (the ones with the serial numbers on them that were provided in 2018). These blue carts are ONLY for recycling!! Please purchase a black or green cart for garbage if you can. If you put garbage in your blue cart and leave it at the curb on garbage day, our drivers will not take it as they think youve put out recycling. If you have a blue-coloured garbage can that YOU hav...e purchased, consider writing garbage on the sides of it with a thick black marker to help avoid confusion. If you see your neighbours using their official serial-numbered blue carts for garbage, please mention it to them or have them call us. We all need to work together to have good waste management in our region. Thank you for your cooperation!!

WVRSC 04.12.2019

Tuesdays Tip Its canning season and we have good news! You can RECYCLE the metal lids and rings when youre done with them! Canning lids have a special sealing compound around the rim, so using them more than once may result in your jars not sealing properly which is a food safety & health risk. Happy harvest! Happy recycling!
