It's baby season and both mother and baby bats are often found on the ground this time of year. If you find a bat please help him/her survive! This link below c...ontains step-by-step directions on what to do, including how to locate a rescuer. Please share so more lives can be saved. NOTE: THIS DIAGRAM ONLY SERVES AS AN EXAMPLE - PLEASE SEE THIS LINK FOR COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS. https://batworld.org/what-to-do-if-you-found_a_bat/ Bat Facts: Less than one-half of one percent of bats contract rabies. In reality, more people die annually from contact with household pets than have died from contact with bats in all recorded history. This doesn’t mean that it’s okay to touch or handle bats, as they may be afraid and bite in self-defense. Bats are wild animals, and all wild animals can be dangerous. Additionally, grounded bats are more likely to be sick so they should never be rescued bare-handed. Bats are shy, gentle, and highly intelligent. They are among the slowest reproducing animals on earth. Most bat species have only one live young per year. The average life-span of a bat is 25 to 40 years. Bats are critical to the health of our planet. Fruit and nectar bats bring us approximately 450 commercial products and over 80 different medicines through seed dispersal and pollination. Up to 98% of all rainforest regrowth comes from seeds that have been spread by fruit bats. Insect-eating bats are literal vacuum cleaners of the night skies, eating millions upon millions of harmful bugs. They protect us by eating insect-pests that destroy crops as well as insects that cause human disease. Bat populations in rapid decline, and White Nose Syndrome is threatening them even further. Half the bats in the US are listed as rare, threatened or endangered. Please also note that people cannot get rabies from just seeing a bat in an attic, in a cave or at a distance. In addition, people cannot get rabies from having contact with bat guano (feces), blood, or urine or from touching a bat on its fur (even though bats should never be handled).
