Swimming around with our sturgeon!

Ripley's Aquarium of Canada 18.01.2021

The sturgeon is the largest freshwater fish in Canada! They can grow up to 2 metres long and weigh up to 136 kilograms. The oldest Canadian sturgeon was found be over 154 years old! #fishfacts #ripleysaquarium #toronto

Mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda) are brightly colored crustaceans that live on reefs. They can grow to be a foot long, and are known among fisherman as "thumb splitters" because of the wallop their hammer-like claws pack. These claws measure only a few inches long, but can deliver blows that accelerate as fast as a .22-caliber bullet! Don't make them angry that's for sure! #fishfacts #ripleysaquarium #ripleysaquariumofcanada #toronto

What are some ways you can reduce plastic in your life? Comment below!

Did you ever spot the pipefish on a visit to the aquarium? They can sometimes be missed but these fish have been well documented throughout fossil records due to their bony exoskeleton. Some of the earliest pipefish fossils date back to almost 50 million years ago! #fishfacts #ripleysaquarium #toronto

Happy Monday fish friends! Today we're looking at Chrysaora quinquecirrha, commonly known as the Atlantic sea nettle, and how they attack! Each sea nettle tentacle is coated with thousands of special microscopic cells called cnidocytes and in turn, every individual cnidocyte has a "trigger" paired with a capsule containing a coiled stinging material. When something gets too close to the sea nettle it will fire its sting. This will inject toxins capable of killing smaller prey or stunning perceived predators. But don't worry! It is non lethal to humans! #fishfacts #ripleysfishfacts #ripleysaquarium #toronto #torontolife #jellyfish

It's a cold January morning, and we hope you are all wrapped up well today! But did you know that fish also have ways of keeping warm in cold temperatures? Fish are poikilotherms, meaning their internal body temperature is largely dependent on the temperature of their environment. That’s bad news if you’re a fish and your environment is negative 20C! The Atlantic Cod, pictured, is one example of how fish can beat back the cold - with inbuilt anti-freeze! As soon as ice cryst...als begin to form in their blood, these antifreeze proteins will coat it and prevent it from growing. This handy little adaptation has allowed these fishes to survive their frigid ocean home by preventing their tissues from being damage by frost. So next time you think you can’t possibly survive another day in the cold, remember the fish: if they can make it, so can you! #fishfacts #ripleysaquarium #ripleys #toronto See more

The Pacific Sea Nettles sting paralyzes their prey, such as copepods and even other sea jellies! They then use their frilled arms to move the food to their digestive system. #jellyfish #aquarium #toronto #ripleysaquarium

Let us introduce you to one of the newer residents of the Aquariumvampires well, the sea lamprey, but they are pretty similar! Lampreys lack jaws, instead possessing a distinct sucker mouth and sharp, radially oriented teeth used to latch onto prey. Their rasping ‘w’ shaped tongue can pierce a fish’s scales and flesh with ease, allowing the lamprey to feast on their blood. These invasive species can be spotted in our Shipwrecks gallery! Come and see them...if you dare! #featuredfishfriday #lamprey #aquarium #toronto #torontolife #ripleys #ripleysaquariumofcanada

Today is International Sawfish Day! Sawfish are one of the most endangered groups of fishes, mainly due to overfishing and entanglements in nets and fishing equipment. Their numbers are declining rapidly, and in some cases have been locally extinct in many parts of their natural habitat. For more information on how to sae these amazing fish, visit the Sawfish Conservation Society's website www.sawfishconservationsociety.org
