Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming the Executive Director of the Art Gallery of Windsor, Jennifer Matotek to our Monday club meeting! We learned about how AGW has adapted to COVID and what we can expect from the gallery moving forward! Community is embedded into the fabric of this organization so the biggest challenge they faced was how do they keep the community engaged, how do they bring art to the people of Windsor-Essex and now they're working on how to bring AR ...and VR to the gallery! Very exciting things are happening and we can't wait to see more from our friends at the Windsor Art Gallery! You can register for a virtual tour here https://www.agw.ca/page/32 Or read our full story here https://rotary1918.com/Stories/zoom-meeting-nov-16-2020

We would like to thank All Star Gaming Centre for their support in helping the Rotary Club of Windsor 1918 make a $1000 donation for a person in the Adult Assistance Program. This donation assisted with the purchase of a new power wheelchair! The recipient shared, As luck would have it, I did Holy Week the same as the past 4 by streaming services. I love the wheelchair. With the mild winter we had, I was able to do my banking, grocery shopping and even a bit of Christmas sh...opping by myself. It felt good not to just give gift cards to my family but actual physical presents." For them, this new wheelchair was also the gift of greater independence and mobility!

Sunday, September 13th, Neil McTavish Rotary Beach Tour Coordinator held the annual Beach Bash Tournament, a continuation of a charity tour that started in 1997 (23 years and counting)! This is the 3rd year that funds from this tournament will benefit Rotary, and this year they will have raised over $4000 Rotary Club of Windsor 1918 by the end of their 4th tournament. Neil says, "This is my favourite tournament every year because we are matching family members. Mostly parent... and child but some of them are brother and sister. Before we start, I tell the kids that this is the day that their parents will show them everything they had been telling them to do on their car rides home from practice each night." Yesterday, during the tournament, Dr. Godfrey Bacheyie spoke to the group about the impact that some of their donation will have on the people of Ghana. Funds will support health care in the region, provide clean water and sanitation, purchase furniture and school supplies for youth and athletic equipment! Neil presented Dr. Bacheyie, and Ron Arkell with a box of Rotary branded soccer balls to give to Ghana's kids on their next trip! Overall, it was a great day enjoyed by all and Rotary Club 1918 was proud to be there to show their support! We want to thank the sponsors for this event, Collège Boréal and Nick Bibic Buckingham Realty (Windsor) Ltd! We also would like to thank the kids and their parents who played in this year's tournament and Neil McTavish for putting together this fantastic event! The last Youth Tour Championship will be held Saturday, September 19th, 10:00 2:00!

Tuesday, marked the official visit of DG Dr. Noel Jackson who shared his Peace Chain initiative with the Satellite Club! But something very special also happened that night as well! We would like to say Congratulations to Dr. Clinton Beckford who was presented with a HERO (Human Engaging Rotary Opportunity) Award by our District Gov. Dr. Clinton Beckford has been involved in humanitarian projects in Tanzania, and elsewhere, before joining Rotary. ... In fact, his "Teachers For Tanzania" program that brought teacher candidates from the Faculty of Education to Tanzania was very popular with students and was very well known in the community. Since joining the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) in 2012 he has been an active member of the World Community Service Committee through which he continued his humanitarian work in Tanzania helping children in vulnerable circumstances with the provision of food, and the promotion of literacy, health and education. Last year, he led the Vocational Training Team in Math education to Tanzania, and he is now actively raising money to renovate one of the schools with which he worked during the VTT. He is an engaged Rotarian that quietly goes about his international service projects. And, on top of those activities, he has been active with our Literacy Committee particularly with literacy projects in Jamaica. This year, embracing our Satellite Club's passion for Social Justice; Clinton serves as our program chair and he has an excellent vision for the kind of speakers to invite to our club in the coming year. For his humanitarian service, and for taking full advantage of his super power of engaging humans in Rotary opportunities, we are proud to recognize Clinton as a D6400 HERO. During the DG's visit, Noel also praised Rotarians on continuing the work we do even during the challenges of Covid-19. He also presented a Master Link in the Peace Chain Award to the Satellite Club of Windsor (1918). The Rotary Minute was presented by Pierre Boulos highlighting Rotary’s impact on literacy and education. There are currently 7 Peace Centres around the world. In the past 15 years, over 1,300 individuals have attended classes offered by the Peace Centres and are now working in more than 115 countries. Pierre shared a video on the newest centre in Kenya. Using a quote from Maya Angelou, Prepare yourself to be the rainbow in somebody else’s cloud, Noel encouraged members to become involved in the service opportunities in offered in the Rainbow Connection. We're very proud to a part of such a dedicated group of Rotarians in District 6400 and around the world!

Monday, August 31st, we welcomed WIFF Executive Director, Vincent Georgie to discuss the new Windsor International Film Festival Under the Stars drive-in concept and how COVID has changed the festival. The past few months have been both a surprising and challenging time for many, including the Windsor International Film Festival! Bringing the community back together was the ultimate goal of Executive Director Vincent Georgie and his team. Vincent explained to Rotarians that t...hey knew the community wouldn't be mad if they decided to cancel November WIFF. Still, they shift their perspective to look for opportunities. Together, they rose to the challenge of "what can we do instead?", explaining that doing "nothing" was not an option for the group. After brainstorming different ideas back in April, they settle on a drive-in concept. The problem was that this solution was proposed while Windsor was in Phase 1. There were still so many unknowns, like what the other phases would look like, when we will get there, and can they pull it off in time? The team was really working in total darkness when it came to predicting the pandemic's future. "We really wanted to keep it very affordable and accessible for as many people as possible," says Vincent. From reaching out to sponsors to the layout of the parking lot, every detail was meticulously planned. The parking lot was designed so that everyone would have a great viewing experience no matter where you were parked. Instead of a typical drive-in projector, they used an LED wall. The equivalent of 50 giant LED screens glued together to build the drive-in at the Riverfront Plaza. This format allows them to show movies during the day for kids! Not to mention the unique location of the WIFF festival offers stunning views of the Detroit skyline and sunsets. In collaboration with the WIFF team, some significant sponsors are responsible for this year's WIFF Under The Stars' success. The community came together and acted quickly to help bring this to life. Vincent says that without the community players who came to the plate right away with their financial support, the team could have never pulled this off. The event launched this past Saturday and has seen massive success. Welcoming back legacy WIFF lovers, and it has also attracted a lot of new faces! This year, the group has been mindful in their movie selection, noting that they can't be sure what anyone is going through right now. All of the films selected from 6 different countries are light-hearted. The festival runs until September 13th! Monday, August 24th, we welcomed Social Media Strategist, Taylor Lanoie to discuss how Rotary can harness the power of social media to grow their membership and increase their fundraising! Taylor has experience helping brands across Canada, the US and Europe amplify their voices online to accomplish their mission! She is passionate about working with community-centric brands, working for the better of people and the planet! She started her presentation by explaining how socia...l media doesn't work like a newspaper or a magazine, just because an ad or an article posted on social media doesn't mean that your followers see it. We discovered the importance of engaging with the content posted to social media and how sharing and commenting could impact the number of people exposed to Rotary and its mission! She shared how the power of social media and can help to support our three goals for this year. Increasing membership by 10% Increasing the diversity of their membership Fundraising Unfortunately, COVID has made it exceptionally hard for most non-profits to raise money, so armed with the knowledge of an upcoming fundraiser for Rotary, Taylor came prepared with a strategy so our members can spread the word more effectively and hopefully make the most out of this fundraising event! (Ps: Every comment (of 3 words or more) on this post gets a $1 donation to the Rotary Club of Windsor)

Monday, August 17th, we welcomed Maestro, Robert Franz of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra to discuss how the symphony has adapted over the past 4 months and what we can expect for the months ahead. Robert Franz echoes the ethos of a Rotarian throughout his career, with a commitment to the highest artistic standards, to creating alliances and building bridges in each community he serves, and a dedication to being a strong force in music education. Early into the pandemic, Rober...t knew the WSO would need to pivot in order to continue to offer music in the moths to come! Wednesday, the WSO announced the introduction of a new Digital Concert Series that you can enjoy at home, any time and a series of other family and student inspired initiatives. This is also a great gift idea. You can gift the music series to anyone in the world. Thanks to a generous grant from the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918), the John McGivney Children's Centre launched their curbside kit program. This program allows JMCC clients to pick up kits filled with items perfect for having fun while working on important fine motor development and therapy goals at home. These kits are being used during virtual therapy sessions and are also perfect for practicing fine motor skills independently or with a family member. This happy client enjoyed trying out his kit with his Occupational Therapist (OT) before bringing it home. Please talk to your JMCC OT for more information.

Very Fitting! Just a small icon in the community on the waterfront here in Windsor. Very timely with the recent announcement of Jennifer Jones. There are many w...omen across the board that have and continue to make a difference for their communities both locally and abroad. I have tagged but a few of the many that raise Rotary to new heights. Ps: if I missed anyone, apologies, not my intention at all.
