Help protect the magnificent 250-year-old Red Oak Tree at 76 Coral Gable Drive! Under Forest Ontario's Heritage Tree Program " The Mighty Oak " is recognized for its "size, age, and cultural significance" Donations collected will help preserve this community treasure, build a parkette, and avoid a sad day of needless demolition:... https://tinyurl.com/red-oak-donate From Catherine Soplet: And for the Oak's symbolic significance, let us not forget the destruction of #hurricanehazel that helped spawn Ontario's conservation areas. In the 1800's Ontario's Oak Savannah had been successfully clear-cut, leaving a delicate ecosystem of roots to, in their decay, destabilize connected riverbanks and set-off a succession of extreme floods. In 1954 there was another disaster of nature, Hurricane Hazel, whose wreckage finally sparked the Conservation Authorities Act, safeguarding Ontarians from such future devastation. To keep the power of protection in the hands of our long-serving Ontarian Conservation Authorities, tell Doug Ford to shed #Schedule6 on #Bill229 by calling your MPP! https://tinyurl.com/call4conservation https://tinyurl.com/email4conservation https://tinyurl.com/thepeople1st #heritage #trees #OUFC #HRBC #humbermede
In 1954 Hurricane Hazel washed over Southern Ontario, sinking bridges, streets, homes, trailers and lives. This most famous hurricane in Canadian history left thousands homeless, 81 dead, and the nation with almost $1 billion lost. But! The disaster mobilized the provincial government around the Conservation Authorities Act, allowing the Ontarian people to rest knowing their land was being conserved and regulated for their benefit and safety. And here we are today, at a... point where we must restate our will as Ontarians, not let ourselves be shoved aside for the interests of private developers, and tell Doug Ford that we deserve to have our forests, wetlands, and communities protected from the consequences of disasters we do not deserve. It is through the consent of we the governed that the powers that be derive their authority. We give them our money to protect us, not lie to us. Now has come the time for Doug to be reminded of that.
