Safety Moment: Shoveling Snow As you may know, certain parts of Canada have already experienced heavy snowfall this past month. Here are some tips on how you can shovel snow safely to help avoid physical strain. 1. Always warm up with light stretches and a quick walk around before you shovel.... 2. Dress appropriately in layers of clothing that provides insulation to help trap body heat and avoid excessive sweating. Make sure to wear proper gloves, socks and to cover your head & ears. 3. Use the proper winter boots that are slip resistant and will keep your feet warm & dry. 4. Try to shovel fresh powdery snow as it is lighter. If the snow is deep, do not try to shovel all the snow at one time. Remove it in layers. 5. Push the snow rather than lifting it; if you do lift use a small shovel or only partially fill the shovel. 6. Lift with your legs and not your back. 7. Pace yourself and don't rush. Make sure to take a break every few minutes, whether you need it or not. 8. Stay hydrated and drink water. 9. If you are using ice melting products, try to use products that are pet and environmentally friendly. 10. Stop shoveling if you are experiencing any discomfort such as neck pain, back pain, chest pain or pressure. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, make sure to consult with your physician. We hope that these tips will help make shoveling snow safe, effective, and accident free!

Safety Moment: Winter Driving Tips It's fall in Canada which means a change in season and weather. This season has a mix of different weather conditions from sun, rain, and snow. Snow has already arrived in different places across the country. Here are just some driving tips to be aware of during snowy and/or icy road conditions. 1. Make sure that your vehicle is prepared for winter driving. (e.g. winter tires, keep a snow brush/scraper in your vehicle, emergency first aid ki...t, etc.) 2. Drive slowly and carefully on snow and ice covered roads 3. Don't tailgate (keep plenty of room between your vehicle and the one in front of you) - stopping takes much longer on snowy and icy roads. 4. Don't forget to wear your seat belt! 5. Avoid using cruise control on slippery roads and winter road conditions. Never use cruise control if conditions are snowy, icy, or wet, because if your car hydroplanes, your car will try to accelerate and you may lose control of your vehicle. This information is from the Canada Safety Council. Check out the following link for more winter driving tips: https://canadasafetycouncil.org/winter-driving-tips/ Finally, plan your trip, check road & weather conditions, and give yourself plenty of time when driving. It's also good to use journey management both at work and in your personal life to make sure that you get to your destination safely. What are some of your own winter driving tips? Stay safe out there!

Safety Moment: Just a friendly reminder that some schools are open and the public school system resumes next week. In the excitement of returning to school, children may forget basic road safety rules as they walk, bicycle, and ride the bus to school. Drivers are urged to use caution when driving through residential areas and never to exceed the school and playground zone speed limits. Adhere to school and playground zone speed limits in your community: - School Zones: 30 km/...h (school days only) from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. unless otherwise posted by the municipality. - Playground Zones: 30 km/h (everyday) from 7:30 a.m. to 1 hour after sunset. Note: Some municipalities (like Calgary) have converted all school zones to playground zones which remain in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Stay safe out there and hope you enjoy the long weekend! #savanna #safetymoment #schoolzones #playgroundzones #safedriving #driving

Safety Moment Inclement Weather: As a drilling rig hand, your work activities are predominantly outdoors throughout all the seasons. While the Spring and Summer seasons bring warm and inviting conditions, they do present their own unique seasonal hazards, particularly thunderstorms with lightning and sometimes tornadoes are spawned. Things to do during a thunderstorm:... - Pay close attention to local weather forecasts and educating yourself to identify the signs of impending inclement weather. - If outdoors, seek shelter immediately if you can hear thunder, you may be in the lightning strike zone; - If driving, safely pull to the shoulder away from trees and power lines and avoid touching metal parts of the vehicle. Remember that the easiest way to be prepared is to monitor radio/television for the latest weather updates.
