We recently joined the Weimar Era group and get to see SO MANY GREAT ART PIECES from this seminal time in Modern Art. We are HUGE fans of Oskar Schlemmer of Bauhaus fame and were surprised that he made a sculpture like this. Have you seen his costume designs? Do you have a favourite Weimar Era artist?

This is a great Ted Talk that reminds us that working WITH limitations can actually be deeply inspiring. For sure when we started Scrap Arts Music we had zero dollars... but lots of time and importantly ideas > musical, choreographic, sculptural. We wanted to build our own orchestra of invented instruments but could have easily been sidelined by the fact that we couldn’t commission or make fine instruments from, say, exotic woods, ourselves... (and honestly, that wasn’t o...ur jam). We realized that we were living in a growing, booming city with lots of high-quality, low-priced scrap flooding the market. (Plus, we want those tropical forests to live!! ) It made sense that if we were to build instruments of our time, they should be from the materials ‘of our times’. Recycling is cool!! We let the unique look and sound of the scrap we found influence the kinds of sonic creations we’d make. The instruments, our compositions, and even the way we’d perform with them, were all a result of being made in our particular time and place. What at first seemed like a limitation (no money in a rich town) became a doorway to limitless creativity. Listening to Phil Hansen’s unique story is inspiring. Would love to hear your thoughts! How cool is this?!

Devo hats? Madonna's bra? It's Hallowe'en so I guess we can get away with saying they are whatever we like! . For the record, these are (what we call) Ziggurat Drums made from what used to be flat sheets of aluminum collected in late '90s Vancouver when the scrap market was being flooded with high quality marine grade sheet metal from the failed BC Ferries scandal. We created wooden forms that looked like this and spun the aluminum on them to crea...te our signature instrument. We were curious about how the sound of the drum would be affected by the stepped shell design and we were delighted by the results! They spin in the stands (here they are locked in their upside down position) and we can ride them thru space. They've travelled more miles than most people will in a lifetime. Happy to announce we got our FACTOR Juried Sound Recording application in on time and man-oh-man does it feel good to have gone through the visualization of the marketing for the re-imagined possibilities of Children of Metropolis (our latest and super exciting new body of repertoire)! Sincere gratitude to the teams involved in the recent coastline cleanups.

Parking lot lampshades found at a college in our neighbourhood during a weekend stroll here in Victoria. Winning! When the college administration changed the lighting from incandescent to LED, the original lampshades were retired, resulting in some primo scrap for us. We ended up using these to create an instrument we call the Dervish Drum . The music that features the Dervish Drums is called Hot Dog, not for the classic fast food connotati...on but for the show off aspect of the drumming. Can’t wait for you to see how these shades are featured in our movie too... (Hint: Grigor is deep in an underground cave and is possessed by/actually emerges from the cave, wearing these!) .
