On this day in 1969, the Apollo 12 spacecraft returned to Earth - splashing down in the Pacific Ocean to complete the ten-day mission. One of the less famous missions of the Apollo program, given the excitement of Apollo 11 and the heroics of Apollo 13, Apollo 12 was the second lunar landing expedition with personnel on board. The lunar module, piloted by Alan L. Bean, landed in the Ocean of Storms - or Oceanus Precellarum - which is more than 1,800 miles wide, making it the ...largest dark spot on the lunar surface and visible with the naked eye from Earth. Scientists once believed that this massive dark spot was created by an ancient asteroid impact, but new evidence suggests that this part of the moon may have been shaped by processes happening beneath the surface. According to EarthSky.org, Scientists say this region might have formed as a result of churning deep in the interior of the moon that led to a high concentration of heat-producing radioactive elements in the crust and mantle on this part of the moon. The next time you’re looking up, see if you can find the Ocean of Storms. Though you cannot see them, you’ll be looking at the footprints of astronauts.

To celebrate this special day, children may want to take a page from the SelfDesign Learning Experience Library and focus on "Getting to Know YOU!"... Who are you? What are your strengths? What challenges you? What supports do you rely on when times are tough? Getting to know yourself is an important part of growing up. Today may be a good day to journal about who you are today, for you to reflect on as you grow up.

Registration in SelfDesign Home Learning is one such option. Though it does not provide the support of a BC Certified Teacher, Home Learning may be an option for parents who wish to take responsibility for their child's education. ... In October 2020, learners in grades 1012 at SelfDesign Learning Community elected our first-ever Learner Council. What had been just an idea in late-2018 now is a fully functioning council working to make the grade 1012 learning experience better for all SelfDesign learners. Former SelfDesign learner Hannah, who commenced in January 2020, shares her journey with the SelfDesign Learner council on our blog:... "This being SelfDesign, the process to establish the council also became part of our own learning journeys. I personally leaned into SelfDesign’s thematic approach to learning and integrated this project into all areas of my education. Council documents became English projects, the planning and organization of council meetings enhanced career and life skills the council even inspired several members’ year-end projects. When SelfDesign says that learning happens everywhere, in every moment, and is enriched through conversations and relationships with others, this is what it means."
