Parchaar Parchaar is the act of spreading knowledge and enlightening others. Langar Day gave us the opportunity to teach staff and students from all different backgrounds about the teachings of Sikhi. With the rise of discriminatory policies like Bill C-21, it is important for us as Sikhs to spread awareness of what Sikhi is. We are grateful to have a platform at university where we can share and present teachings of Sikhi. We had engaging conversations with staff and stu...dents and cleared many doubts and questions they had about Sikhi. Thank you to everyone that engaged in any form of Parchaar. #DhanGuruNanak #Gurpurab550 #LangarDay @ James Douglas Safe Study Area @ SFU

Dhan Guru Nanak In celebration of the 550th Parkash Gurpurab of Guru Sahib we had a wonderful opportunity to have Langar Day at Burnaby Campus. Langar was started by the first Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. It is a free vegetarian nutritious meal. The purpose behind Langar is to fight hunger and teach compassion while putting equality in practice as everyone is seated on ground level. ... Did you know Sri Darbar Sahib (The Golden Temple) is the worlds largest free kitchen and feeds over 50,000 people a day! With Guru Sahibs Kirpa, we were blessed to have such an incredible event. We served langar to over 400 people while spreading Guru Sahib’s message of equality. Thank you to everyone that took out time to help and made Langar Day possible #DhanGuruNanak #Gurpurab550 #LangarDay @ James Douglas Safe Study Area @ SFU

Seva Langar Day gave us the opportunity to do Seva. Seva is a significant concept in Sikhi, and it means selfless service. Seva is performed without the expectation of anything in return. A Sikh is a servant of the Guru and should aim to serve and do seva without ego. As Sikhs we strive to uphold the teaching of Sarbat Da Bhalla which means prosperity of all. Seva can be done anywhere starting right from your home to the broader community. Seva comes in many forms such... as planting a tree, washing dishes at home or gurdwara, feeding the homeless, tutoring someone, and much more. We appreciate everyone that came out and did Seva, and made Langar Day such a success We are also so grateful and thankful to @gnfk_van for all there help and may Maharaj bless them with more Seva! #DhanGuruNanak #Gurpurab550 #LangarDay @ James Douglas Safe Study Area @ SFU

The Blood Donation by Sikh Nation campaign will be taking place in Surrey next weekend on Nov. 9th and Nov. 10th. Nov. 9: Unit C2 15285 - 101 ave from 10-5pm Nov. 10: Ecole Gabrielle-Roy School (6887 132st) from 10-4:45pm TRIGGER WARNING... In November of 1984, Congress Party officials of India planned and executed a genocide against Sikhs. Government officials rounded up mobs and equipped them with gasoline, batons, and rubber tires. They were also provided voters lists, school registries, and ration data to pin point every Sikh home and business in Delhi and throughout India. Mobs systemically burnt down Sikh houses, beat children to death, raped and killed women, and put car tires around the necks of men and burnt them alive after chopping their hair. In remembrance of the blood shed by our kaum, Sikhs donate blood in the month of November to commemorate this dark week. The Sikh Nation is currently the biggest donating partner with Canadian Blood Services and has saved over 140,000 lives. It’s been 35 years since the genocide; 35 years of pain and trauma. We will continue to fight for justice. They may have bloodied our bodies but they could never kill our spirit. #Neverforget1984 #SikhGenocide

Fun facts about the founding of SFU SSA: - the first SFU SSA Kirtan happened in Maggie Benston Centre, in the food court. There was no Surrey campus back then. Guru Granth Sahib Ji's prakash happened and over 100 people attended. - all SSA communication used to happened though email. There was no WhatsApp or Instagram. In fact, when SSA was founded, MSN Messenger was just being launched! (For those that remember)... - the founding members started a $20,000 bursary named after Bhagat Puran Singh Ji for students with disabilities. This was the first instance of SSA's tradition of fundraising for good causes - at the first Nagar Kirtan after its founding, SSA members handed out Quiznos sandwiches out of a 4x4 tent - some of the first guest speakers were Ins. Baltej Singh Dhillon and Raj Kaur Khalsa So much has changed over the past 20 years! With the support of the SFU community and the local community, we hope to see our club continue to flourish in the coming years. Our 20th anniversary celebrations are coming up soon on Sept 28th at Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar! Come and join us as we celebrate the past 20 years and look forward to many more years to come. #20saalssadenaal #sfussa20th #roaring20 #20yearsinthemaking @ Burnaby, British Columbia

Sikh Heritage Month was a unique challenge for the SSAs. Inspired by @sikhheritagemonth celebrations in Ontario and other parts of Canada, students from across the Lower mainland spearheaded this initiative in 2018 with great success. In a society with hateful sentiments on the rise, the SSA aimed to tackle the stigma around Sikhs. At the same time, this was an opportunity to celebrate our heritage and the progress our community has made here. We were humbled by the response ...from not only the Sikh community, but other communities as well. Sikh Heritage Month has now been recognized federally and new chapters have opened across the country, like @sikhheritagemanitoba who have taken this mission further as they delve into the histories of Sikhs in Canada. @sikhheritagemonthbc also continues to grow, and we are looking forward to April 2020. Our 20th anniversary celebrations are coming up soon on Sept 28th at Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar! Come and join us as we celebrate the past 20 years and look forward to many more years to come. #20saalssadenaal #sfussa20th #roaring20 #20yearsinthemaking

We will have many opportunities to celebrate throughout the year, but we will begin on Saturday, September 28th at Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar. Join us on this night of rejoicing, prayer, and reflection as we celebrate our 20th year and the start of a new school year in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji's refuge. Stay tuned for more details about this event, and don't miss our other posts as we attempt to recap and reflect on the past 20 years. #20saalssadenaal #sfussa20th #roaring20 #20yearsinthemaking

For many students, SSA was their family. They found it in a pivotal moment in their lives and it helped them stay connected. One of those alumni, @amarkaur, is now involved in the community, helping run blood donation drives and stem cell swabbing campaigns. Here is what she has to say about her time in the SSA:... "A friend of mine was sitting at the SSA club days booth and pretty much forced me to sign up. I was hesitant because I hadn't heard of it before then. I figured I'd attend a meeting or two, have my attendance marked and then that would be it. I was wrong. This group of my peers quickly became my family. The weekly discussions made me reflect on my own journey. The amritvela programs nourished my soul. The quarterly kirtans rejuvenated my being. I hadn't had this type of sangat before and it was invigorating. We were just a bunch of kids talking about what Sikhi meant to us and how we could help each other on this path. I was voluntold into participating in Nihaal. I was voluntold to act in Nihaal. All things that I would never have done on my own. There was a lot of mutual voluntelling happening. If it wasn't for the SSA I wouldn't have been able to grow within my Sikhi. From the discussions to the amritvela programs to the kirtans and the guest speakers, it was all a necessary part of my journey. For that and so much more, I am forever grateful to the SSA." Our 20th anniversary celebrations are coming up soon on Sept 28th at Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar. The SSA has a rich history of being involved in the community. This picture is from a collaboration with the Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Gatka Akhara from @gurunanakacademy. The Academy was started by Bhai Parminder Singh Ji in Surrey in 2003, and has provided a space for youth to become immersed in Sikhi. Many SSA alumni had previously learned from or went on to be involved in the Academy. This relationship is still going strong and we hope to see more great things from future c...ollaborations. Our 20th anniversary celebrations are coming up soon on Sept 28th at Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar. The SSA has provided many students with a community and a place to learn over the past 20 years. One of those alumni, @paneetsingh, is now a celebrated director and playwright and does a lot of community work. His latest show #GuardsattheTaj is currently playing at @vancouverfringe. Here is what he has to say about his time in the SSA: "My time in the SFU Sikh Students' Association was one of the highlights and transformative parts of my life. I grew up in a Sikh family an...d community, but not in a city with a highly concentrated Sikh population, like Surrey. When I went to university, it was the first time I got to go to school with other people who grew up in a similar environment to me. It also allowed me a chance to get to know so many different types of Sikhs who had varied experiences, homes, and backgrounds, and it really broadened my horizons as to what it means to practice and love Sikhi. The SSA gave me an invaluable spiritual foundation and community during my time at SFU. Many of the organizational skills I learned in university were not through classes, but through organizing programs and events with the SSA. Ten years later, a lot of my circle of closest friends and sangat is made up by relationships that were forged or strengthened during my time with the SSA. The roadwork to who I became as a young adult was laid by the SSA, and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything." Our 20th anniversary celebrations are coming up soon on Sept 28th at Gurdwara Sahib Sukh Sagar. Come and join us as we celebrate the past 20 years and look forward to many more years to come. #20saalssadenaal #sfussa20th #roaring20 #20yearsinthemaking

Your actions seem so sweet to me. Chabeel’ is a Punjabi word for sweet, cold, non-alcoholic drink. The fifth guru, Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji became the first Sikh Martyr in 1606 for refusing to change and compromise their faith. ... They attained martyrdom when the mughals sat them on a hot iron plate and poured hot sand over them; whilst burning alive physically, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji meditated and accepted the Gods will as sweet. So for this event, we aim to serve sweet, cool, flavoured milk to students in honour of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Instead of mourning, Sikhs honour the Guru's shaheedi (martyrdom) and use it as a way to unite everyone by serving free cold drinks. This is a representation of Chardi Kala, which is the state of being in uplifting spirits and eternally optimistic. We hope to see you all on Friday 14th June at SFU Surrey in the Mezzanine 12pm - 4pm where we’ll be serving chabeel. #ChabeelDay #ChardiKala See more

At this moment, there are 47 South Asian individuals that are actively searching for a stem ce...ll match. Without a match, their cancer will not be cured. Only 6% of Canada’s OneMatch registry is made of individuals with South Asian descent. Let's make our community stronger. Let's give hope to those amazing fighters and show them that we are here in support. Share this post and help us spread the word! #canadianbloodservices #givelife #getswabbed #stemcell #donordrive #donate #community #strength
