Some of the big studios require of you to provide them recommendation letters from Faculty. Your teachers will usually be willing to write something for you if you have somehow stood out in their class-- hopefully you have developed a good relationship with them during your time at Sheridan. But what if you haven't? Here are some tips to make sure you're not committing a faux-pas with your professors when asking for a Letter of Recommendation: 1) Ask early. You're probably n...ot the only student who will ask a certain teacher for a letter, so naturally most people will ask as deadlines approach. 2) Know who to ask. Even if you're very talented at a certain area (like painting or animation), if you're one of those people who never shows up to class or never speaks up the teacher will probably have no recollection of you. You want to ask someone who has witnessed and hopefully been impressed by your work ethic and quality so he or she can write good things about you. Additionally, if you're pursuing a specific internship like Story or 3D Modeling, you should ask someone who can write about your performance in those areas. 3) Be polite. Realize that you're asking a top industry professional to give you some of their time, unpaid. You're asking for a favour, and they are in no way obligated to say yes. This is where having a good relationship with your teachers pays off, since you will be comfortable enough to ask for this kind of favour as opposed to awkwardly approaching somebody with whom you've had a confrontational or half-assed attitude. Don't rush them (this is why you have to ask early), and graciously accept a negative if they decline. 4) Provide the teacher with all the info they need. If a studio asks for a particular format or specific info in their letter, be ready to provide that to your teacher when he or she agrees to write something for you. They're agreeing to give you some of their time so try to not waste any of it. 5) No boilerplate. If you want the letter to have the best possible impact, it should not sound generic. At the very least the header should be addressed to the studio you're applying, so let your teacher know this in advance in case he wants his or her letter to be sealed. 6) Say Thank You. Once the teacher provides you with a letter, go the extra mile and send him a thank you email.
