Meet our new friend Mulu! We've developed quite the partnership with the YMCA of Greater Saint John and their newcomers program. Mulu is interested in pursuing a career in the trades and we think he is perfect for the job. Strong work ethic, willing to learn and not afraid to try anything, including hammering up tile with our The SJTL Build Team ! We are excited to see who the lucky construction team will be that Mulu ends up with!

It's time again! The shop has been pumping out product like crazy and the side effect is lots of mixed scrap wood. Some of this stuff is log size and lots is kindling size. No pressure treated or plywood in this, most of it is mixed hardwood and pine. If you want some, stop by the roadside pickup at 6 Rideau st, Saint John. Take what you need. Some is boxed but the biggest stuff is loose In the bin so you may need to bring your own bin for transport.

Check out this update from Living Saint John and the YMCA of Greater Saint John concerning our training program for construction Labourers In Saint John. STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM YMCA & SJ TOOL LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM In 2017, Ming Tang (Tony) arrived as a newcomer in Saint John from China with a professional background in manufacturing. ... He hoped to expand his skillset and transition to a new career in the construction and concrete sector. He registered for one of the Pathways to Employment program through YMCA Newcomer Connections. This program was offered in partnership with the Saint John Tool Library (SJTL) to address Saint Johns high unemployment rate and shortage of general labourers with basic trade skills. But this community development initiative was faced with a serious barrier to success: COVID-19. The Y was forced to close its facilities, the SJTL was unable to accommodate students on-site, and Tonys career aspirations were put on hold. "COVID-19 delayed the start of our program by more than a month," said Brent Harris, SJTL Founder. "We had hoped to start sooner but, due to the small workshop that we have at the Tool Library, we didnt know how we could meet the criteria regarding spacing." Amidst the pandemic, the Y had to quickly pivot to providing programming online. The employment language training aspect of this program was delivered remotely by Y staff members. Its students needed only an internet-ready computer or mobile device to participate from the safety of their own homes. But once New Brunswick entered the Yellow Phase of the Provincial Recovery Plan, Tony and his classmates were able to visit the SJTL for four days of intensive, hands-on experience. Each student had the opportunity to practice every step of concrete work: building forms, reinforcing, mixing, pouring, and more. The students understood most construction-related lingo. They were able to learn effectively and a few were able to demonstrate existing skill sets they had acquired previously, said Harris. According to Harris, Saint John is in short supply of reliable general labourers. Many contractors, construction companies, and tradespeople report that these jobs consistently go unfilled because people lack the basic skill sets required to be useful on job sites. "The local pool of labourers with basic trades skills is certainly lacking. By partnering with the YMCA of Greater Saint John, we hope to bring value to this sector," said Harris. On July 10, Tony was one of eight students who completed the Construction and Concrete program, several of whom are currently in the interview process with prominent local companies. They have obtained the skills to build new lives and enrich our community. For more information call 506-634-4860. https://mailchi.mp/741db5f87039/hunger-a-film-4895438

Hi folks! We are expanding our hours this week going forward. We are still maintaining the Covid-19 measures that we put in place of course. Those include calling ahead to book time in the shop, calling ahead to reserve/return tools, and we are doing disinfecting of the tools before and after they come back. ALSO, we are still moving, we have secured a place, but we are just waiting for the banks to close on the deal with the developer who has stepped up to support us. Stay tuned on that front! As for the hours we are now open. Tues 12-8, Wed 9-5, Thurs 12-9, Fri 11-6, Sat 9-4, Sun 10-4. We are excited to get rolling again!
