Name: Papi Breed: Siberian Husky x Alaskan Malamute Sex: Male Age: 5.5 years Cats: No... Dogs: Maybe Kids: No Hey, I’m Papi and I am about 5.5 years old. My foster mom has nicknamed me Happy Papi and also Fluffy. I am such a silly, goofy hairball that I know I will be popular, but I am not for just anyone, so please read carefully. I am seeking an adult-only home that is willing to give me training. I am here at the rescue after my previous owner left me in a kennel in the yard for 3 years. My only human interaction has been through fencing, until recently. As a result, I am not well-socialized and I have next to no training. I do also have a bite history. I have been mouthing my foster family when uncomfortable handling is performed, but haven’t broken the skin since my arrival here. I am so happy to be experiencing freedom that I bounce for joy. You could call me a jumping bean. I have no general obedience skills and I like to be a bit grabby with my mouth when being leashed up, as well as just in general. I am not a fan of hugs or taking selfies with you; and am really not a fan of having my feet handled. I will need to form a relationship with a groomer (when they are allowed to open) as well since I have a long coat and will need regular grooming in order to maintain my gorgeous fluffy coat. My previous veterinarian had noted on my file that I am a bad patient and need to be muzzled due to lunging at the doctor, so please be mindful of this even though I haven’t exhibited any lunging while here in rescue care. I am a big boy at around 75-80 pounds, so an owner strong enough to handle me is necessary. I am strong on leash since I have very rarely ever been on one. I have not been formally introduced to dogs yet since I am fairly new here in rescue, but I am not reactive to the dogs as they walk past my kennel, or when I walk past their kennel. A meet and greet will be required with any potential new siblings. My notes say that I liked watching dogs walk past me on the street, so I am likely ok with most dogs. I have not been around cats, so please let’s not go there. I am neutered, up to date on all of my vaccinations, flea treated, and microchipped. I am ready to go home with you! This is Melissa, the founder of SMART. I will be away from the computer and rescue until the weekend. I start my new job training in the morning. I pray the rescue doesn't fall apart in my absence. Usually something happens as soon as I step away for a few hours :( SMART will be in the hands of our new board member Cindy Riddell and the rest of the team Thursday and Friday so that I can get my job training done. I will not be reachable, and I pray nothing goes to wrong. Pl...ease be patient as we all adjust to this new change and while Cindy settles in to her new, huge role. There may be delays in responses and processing applications and intake requests, and you may be asked for information (such as email addresses for home visits) that I have and she does not. These changes came upon rather suddenly and I didn't have time to fully prepare the team for my absences. Thank you for your understanding as we adjust and work through the kinks during transition.

We'd like to take a moment to thank all our donors as well as our volunteers. It truly takes a village to operate a Rescue, and this past week proved that we have a strong group of followers and volunteers. We put a shout out for Flea/Tick and Deworming medications so that we can help the dogs/puppies in the far northern community of Kingfisher Lake Indian Reserve. We had donations from as far as Gatineau QC, Fergus ON to Kitchener ON. We were very fortunate to have one o...f the veterinarians we work with make a substantial donation of products; Thank you very much South Tower Animal Hospital! Lastly we cannot forget to thank our wonderful new friend who flies into the reserve to work tirelessly as nurse every other month. This is the kind soul who brought Indi down to our rescue and we are hopeful this trip he may be able to bring more pups down into rescue where we can find them loving homes. Friends we appreciate your support and thank you very much, every little bit helps. #smart_rescue #ittakesavillage #kingfishwerlakereserve #thankyouforyoursupport See more

Some of our available dogs. These dogs all need foster homes unless their bio indicates otherwise. Every dog that enters care is in foster for 2 weeks before being listed, so we have more dogs than what is listed here. Fill out an application at https://www.smartrescue.ca/application and inquire. We may just have a dog coming available that suits you, or a dog needing to come into care that could potentially suit you! We specialize in pairing dogs with their people! ATTENTION SENIOR LOVERS! We've been contacted to assist these 4. They will be 10 years old in a month and are all littermate siblings. There are 3 males and 1 female. All are intact. These dogs are safe in a kennel, however, they need to be split up and placed into foster homes so they can learn the ways of life. They are untrained, unkempt, mouthy, and in need of experienced foster placements while we learn more about them. Their owner died and these poor dogs got left in c...rates without food or water for 5 days before arriving to the SPCA. They are in the caring, safe hands of a boarding kennel in Dunrobin, but they are a lot to handle as a pack and it isn't productive to them to stay together. ALL PLACEMENTS NEED TO BE KID AND CAT FREE PLEASE! If you can foster one of these seniors, please submit an application on our website smartrescue.ca now! Applications will be reviewed by ourselves as well as the kennel that is housing them. Please expect delays in the processing. Let's get these boys and girl into home environments :)

Hugest of thank you's to Kibble 4 Paws for the food supply and to Miss Dixie's for the referral for this shipment! Our dogs will be well fed for about 6 months from this shipment alone. Thank you everyone involved!!! Nova came along for the trip and did well!

Name: Kira Breed: Siberian Husky mix Sex: Female Age: 2 years Cats: No... Dogs: Yes - see description Kids: No Hey my name is Kira, and I’m searching for an experienced hands-off home that wants a fun-loving, highly treat motivated girl! I am looking for a fun and active home where I am not physically handled much! If this is you or could be you, I’d love to follow your treats! Treats are amazing and I’ll do anything for them! I’m a girl that needs a fenced yard, with a fence minimally 5ft high. I am not a fan of being leashed up due to not liking having my collar/neck handled or touched. I am crated trained and house trained. I am very loyal and obedient to my human once we establish a connection. I am very prey-driven. Please no cats for me. I am sometimes good with other dogs, however it is better if they do not live with me and we only have supervised playdates. You see, I am food and toy possessive with other dogs and people. I am selective with other dogs, and will appear friendly at first, but over time of seeing the same dogs day after day, I get worse and worse in my interactions with them. I cannot live with or be around children due to the food and toy aggression as well as my displeasure towards collar handling. I need to be muzzled for vet visits or even anything done at home like wound inspections, nail trims, grooming, etc. If you respect my wishes and pet me when I ask and don’t push my limits, then we can get along just fine! I do have a multiple bite history; all surrounding collar grabbing/handling. I know how to sit before my dinner is served, but I will put on a dance routine before I sit briefly! I love to spin in excitement for my food and will lead you right to my bowl with my dance moves! It takes me a few days to warm up to new people and trust you, so please be gentle my first few days with you. I am believed to be spayed, but it is not confirmed. I will be microchipped prior to adoption. I am ready to go home with you! Name: Kali Breed: Alaskan Malamute mix Sex: Female Age: 4 years Cats: No... Dogs: No Kids: No Hi, I'm Kali and I was born on December 7 2016, so I am about to turn 4 years old. I am here seeking a forever home in a single-family home without other animals or children. If you can offer me this, please read carefully. I am seeking a new home immediately due to behaviour traits that make me unsafe to remain in my current home with a young child. You see, ever since I was a puppy, I have been aggressive with dogs, young children, and people I am not familiar with. I need an experienced home that is familiar with my breed and able to manage my traits. I have been through puppy classes and am well-trained in that aspect. I am even trained to lift my feet so that you can dry them off when I come in from outside with wet/muddy feetsies. Once I get to know you and become comfortable with you, I am very loving. I love to go on long walks and to go swimming. I am house trained, and have been crated in the past. I will likely need a refresher on my crate training. I love to be outside and have been living primarily outside in my fenced yard. I will need a fence or adequate containment, and ideally a rural home to reduce any altercation risks between other dogs and children, as well as strangers. I do like to be inside as well with my family, and sleep inside at night. I have not been around cats, so lets not go there. I am up to date on all of my vaccinations and will be adopted on a strict non-breeding and spay contract to be completed at the appropriate time following my next heat cycle as I am not yet spayed. My adopter will be provided with an already registered microchip to have inserted upon my adoption as I am not yet microchipped. We've had a very busy weekend here at SMART! First, we picked up 2 truck loads of patio slabs and 26 fencing panels on Saturday with the huge help of: Nancy and Steve Cardwell (alumni x1), Roberta and Graham Kozak (alumni x3), Debbie Mowat and her 2 sons (fosters), Jim Sheehan (alumni x4), Alan Boyce (alumni x2), Matt Hadzalic, and Shelley Bracken (alumni x2). While there, Nymeria was dropped off to us by her owner and adopted today to an adopter waiting for her. Yesterday,... another adopter drove all the way from Stirling to Bracebridge to pick up a dog to adopt through another rescue. Fez was also finally adopted yesterday as well! Thank you to our amazing fosters, adopters, volunteers, supporters, donors, etc. You all make this possible!

Did you know that while we currently have 11 dogs listed for adoption, many of them also need fosters if they can't get a quick adoption? Additionally, on top of those 11, we have 1 in foster assessment hold, 1 arriving to foster this weekend, 1 still with owner and waiting to be listed, 2 in shelters awaiting intake, 2 awaiting transfer in from other rescues, and this number increases daily? Fosters are such a hugely important part of rescue! We can't bring them in with nowhere for them to go!! Name: Spencer Breed: Siberian Husky mix Sex: Male Age: 2 years Cats: No... Dogs: Selective Kids: No Hi there, I’m Spencer and I am about 2 years old. I am seeking an experienced forever home with a fence at least 6ft high, so please read carefully. I need exercise, structure, rules and training, so please be prepared to give me what I need! I have the most expressive ears! My ears are always moving up and down and begging for you to give my any attention at all! Even just talking to me makes me a happy little boy. I will also lean in for cuddles and snuggles once I know you. I warm up to new people quickly, but can be stand-offish and/or growl initially if meeting through a fence. I found myself in the shelter due to guarding strange people from entering my previous home, but only from the front door. In the shelter, I showed no guarding issues of this sort and was even fine with meeting dogs through my kennel. However, here in boarding, I have growled at one human stranger who offered me a hand to sniff while I was in my kennel, and I am not a fan at all of other dogs approaching my kennel. When I am outside of my kennel, I am a lot less reactive. A meet and greet will be required if I am to live with other dogs. I have not been with cats, but due to my guarding and highly excitable nature, please let’s not go there. I cannot be with children. I do have a bite history over a tissue that I wanted being held too long for my liking, and multiple times have mouthed and nipped/snapped without breaking the skin. I excite very easily, which is why I have little inhibition to not use my mouth. If I have a bone in my mouth, I will growl and turn away so you cannot take it from me. I love my dinner so much that I bounce up and down until I am served. I will sit for a moment before my dinner bowl heads towards the floor, and am working on sitting longer before being fed. I am not good on a tether as I tangle myself a lot, and will bite when you are trying to help me in my panic. I am highly trainable, workable, and manageable for someone with the experienced, time, and energy level needed to shape me into the great little boy I know I can be! Essentially, I act like a 4 month old puppy, but am 2 years old. Think of me as a big puppy, and train me as such, and we can get along just fine! I am neutered, up to date on all of my vaccinations, flea treated, and microchipped. I am ready to go home with you! We have the best supporters! We finally received the invoices for Fez' vetting to date. Records show a $300 donation was called in to the clinic on August 27 from an anonymous donor. Wow! Whomever you are, thank you! His surgery was just shy of $430 with our 50% discount, and he's had an additional $213 in vetting throughout September. The remainder of his balance has been paid by Tyler Mosher, who so very generously sponsors a lot of our vetting each year <3 once again, we cannot thank Tyler and Anonymous enough for covering Fez' vetting to date. Name: Nova Breed: Siberian Husky mix Sex: Female Age: 3 years Cats: No... Dogs: Yes Kids: No Hi, I'm Nova and my age is estimated around 2.5 years based on my veterinary records as opposed to my surrender form that says I am 4.5. I am seeking a very special type of home, so please read carefully. The first requirement in my forever home is an experienced owner familiar with fear aggression. I also need a home that understands resource guarding. I was raised in a family home with children, however, I unfortunately bit a child while snatching a sunflower seed from her hand. My family decided I could no longer be a part of their family, and for good reason after the traits I showed upon entering foster care. I do show lots of promise for the right person, and a meet and greet will most definitely be needed before I can go home with you just to see how I react to you and to make sure you understand my initial behaviours before I settle in and show you my sweet side. I am a quirky girl, but for someone with experience that can manage my bad behaviour for the first 2 weeks before I settle into my new surroundings and routine, I am so worth the effort! You will know when I am more comfortable and showing my true colours when I stop lunging with teeth and gums barred, stop guarding rooms, start wagging my tail when I see you, and when I start talking up a storm! I warmed up to my foster dad within a couple of days, but I did warm up to my foster mom after 2 weeks. I like to play more with foster dad, but I have no idea what a toy is. I am fairly low energy when outside in the yard, but do get some zoomies especially when it is play time. I am snuggly when I trust you, and will lean into you with my side for some petting. I have even given kisses! I am house trained and reportedly crate trained, however this has not been tested here in rescue boarding. My family said I am good with dogs, and though this has not been tested here in boarding, I am not showing anything to indicate otherwise. I am just starting to trust the caregivers here, so I will know more on how I am with other dogs soon. I have not been around cats, but given my breed, history, quirks, and resource guarding, let’s just avoid cats. I am spayed and microchipped. I am ready to go home with the right person for me.
