Sewing Machine Factory Artists in Residence 22.11.2020

Artist in Residence for the Sewing Machine Factory, Simone A. Medina Polo is running a poetry workshop to raise funds for her short-book publication, Meltdown: Capitalism, Acceleration, and Exhaustion. The poetry workshop requires an hour and a half commitment. Bringing your own notebook is encouraged. The workshop will cover: - A discussion on how we relate to language in different ways. Like, what can we learn from how others use language? And what does that make us think a...bout how we use our own language? And as poets, how do we deal with working with the limits of language? - A writing exercise to work some poetry out of these problems and prompts. - A closing discussion to debrief and discuss the exercise and poetry. The event will be taking place at The Sewing Machine Factory (ALLEY ENTRY, 9562 82 Ave NW). Do be aware that mobility access to space is restricted due to stairs. The venue is +18. The space will be open for the Sunday Drop-In right afterwards. And there is food and beverages on site! Sliding scale, $5 - $15

SVAAN is proud to host its first community zine workshop at the The Sewing Machine Factory this fall. October 6, 2019 The Sewing Machine Factory 9562 82 ave NW (Alley Entry) 1 - 5 pm... By Donation 18+ Join us for an afternoon of zine making! Whether it's your own project you'd like to work on, or you'd like to contribute to our first zine (to be released to the public in December), you're most welcome. The Sewing Machine Factory Artists in Residence will be taking place during these hours, and both artists will be avaliable to chat. We are excited to introduce our facilitator for this upcoming workshop! Brooke Leifso is an Expressive Art Practitioner. Brooke (she/her) is the Robertson-Wesley’s Spirited Arts Movement Justice Artistic Director and is in the final stages of her masters in Expressive Art Therapy - Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding through the European Graduate School. The focus of the workshop blends with Brooke's thesis work (circles with men to talk about me too) and her work with women/femme folk who’ve experienced gender based violence (stories we don’t tell in 2013). She identifies with values in anti-oppression, and lives with disability. All these layers of identity, experience and skill find their way into her work. She has facilitated in various spaces that hold space for activism (APIRG, Edmonton Bikes, McCauley Community League), queer identity (Coming Out Monologues, ISMSS), disability support, advocacy and art (CRIPSiE, Gateway Association and Self Advocacy Federation), and Expressive Art Programming for youth in government care through agencies around Edmonton. She advocates for local Community Art Practices throughout the city and sometimes creates her own performance art. This will be going on from 2 pm to 4 pm. Entrance is by donation. All necessary materials will be provided. Nobody will be turned away. We respectfully acknowledge this workshop is taking place on treaty 6 territory in amiskwaciwaskahikan. We acknowledge sexual violence as a result of colonization and commit to reconciliation efforts wherever possible within the scope of anti-sexual violence work. We also acknowledge the MMIWG2S+ of this country and the injustice they and their families continue to experience.
