Did you know that huskies are more likely to have two different coloured eyes than other breeds? Known as bi-eyed or bi-colored, it's a normal genetic trait of 'wolfish breeds'. Approximately 40% of huskies have blue eyes! There isn't any blue pigment, it's the way the light enters the eye kind of like how thick ice looks blue.

When you can't pick one, you end up with two! Retired husky heroes, Xaska and Quaid, were adopted last month by Leigh-Anna and her son Louis. Leigh-Anna says, "Xaska & Quaid have completed our 'PACK' (3 humans, 14 year old princess shitzu, 2 cats, 4 rodents and a rabbit) - we're so excited to love them and for them to love us. They have fabulous personalities and are highly intelligent. They enjoy lazing around and being pampered. They don't particularly like car rides, but t...hey'll go along with everything we ask of them. Both Xaska & Quaid have mastered the stairs and they LOVE to hang out with Louis in the basement. Let's be clear though - going for walks is not for the faint of heart; you better have your walking shoes on! It's become the favourite part of our day!! We're very blessed to have Xaska & Quaid for their senior years - to enjoy life to its fullest." Good boys, Xaska and Quaid! We will see you soon. Interested in adopting? Check out our adoptions page! https://www.snowyowltours.com/adopt/available-for-adoption/

Everyone, say hi to Ben! Benny, as we like to call him, is in his first season with us at Snowy Owl. Born in New Zealand with Malaysian roots, in his spare time, Ben loves to snowboard. Here's to a wicked rookie season, Benny!

The original lead dog! Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours was founded by Connie, whose father was one of Alberta's first park rangers. Growing up living in parks across the province nurtured Connie's love and respect for the outdoors. Connie, a true pioneer, wanting to share her passion of dog sledding and the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, began running dog sled tours way back in 1983 when Canmore was still a sleepy coal mining town.

We are wishing all our fellow Canadians a happy and healthy Thanksgiving! We hope you’re enjoying your time with loved ones as much as Charger is enjoying giving young Atlas kisses!

It won't be long now until our Goat Creek trail opens. Since we cross Goat Pond on this trail system, we have to ensure that the ice is thick enough to withstand the weight of our teams. Here's a video of owner Jereme and his daughter Alice checking out the thickness of the ice. It's always an exciting time when this baby opens! There's still some availability from now until the new year, so why not say goodbye to 2020 by dog team?

Happy Boxing Day! Today we're celebrating Pedro Gracia, who has loyally shuttled guests from our office in Canmore to the trails in Kananaskis for the last 12 seasons! In his spare time, Pedro loves to play his saxophone around Canmore.

Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours 03.09.2020

Autum is in the air! Leaves are turning golden yellow and there is already snow in the mountains! It won’t be long now before old man winter is finally here! So what will this winter season look like with COVID? The good news is that dogsledding naturally allows for social distancing while guests ride/drive sleds with their friends and family! Information about our COVID policies and procedures can be found on our website here: https://www.snowyowltours.com//how-were-...dealing-with-covi/ We are looking forward to seeing you on the trail soon!

Our dogs are our #1 priority! Unfortunately, dog sledding is an unregulated sport in Canada. This means there's no standard of care that's required and it's up to individual kennels to determine what level of care they provide their pack. We believe in the value of healthy, happy, working pets! They're not only members of our pack, but members of our family and we'll always go the extra mile for them, every time. Details on how we care for our dogs can be found on our websit...e: https://www.snowyowltours.com/sled-dog-welfare/ Caleb Huizinga Photography

New Covid Restrictions Update We're pleased to confirm that our sled dog tours are still running with the new restrictions that were announced on Dec 8, 2020! Our guest and staff safety are our top priority, and we are following all health and safety guidelines set out by Alberta Health Services. We will be following strict physical distancing requirements, sanitizing all contact surfaces often (we even found some for our sleds that won’t freeze!) and masks are required whi...le checking in and during all transportation. We encourage guests who may wish to cancel their reservation to consider transferring the value of their tour to a gift card or rescheduling their tour to a future date instead of receiving a refund. Small businesses like us need your support like never before! Thank you for understanding. Please feel free to post any questions in the comments, or call 587-807-0852. One of the most popular questions we get asked is, what should I wear? Baby, it's cold outside! Our trails are located in Spray Lake Provincial Park in Kananaskis which is a higher elevation than Canmore and therefore typically colder. Add in the windchill once the husky's start pulling and you're going to feel the cold. Click the link for all our tips and suggestions for staying toasty warm. https://www.snowyowltours.com/to/winter-tours/what-to-wear/

There’s a lot of pre-winter preparation that goes into making sure that our tours run smoothly all season long. Here is owner, Jereme, and senior instructor, Kurt, along with trusty companion and wannabe sled dog Nosler, putting in the dog boxes at our overnight winter camp. Our 2 day/1 night Ghost of Fortune Mountain tour is a Destination Canada Signature Experience and is the ultimate winter adventure! While these dog boxes are sent to site well before any tours, all other ...equipment, gear and necessities, which includes fresh wood shavings for all the dog boxes, are taken to the camp while guests enjoy their first full day of dog sledding. At the end of their day, guests will arrive to a fully functional winter camp equipped with top of the line @thenorthface gear and a prepped and ready to cook dinner! These tours operate later in our season, typically during February and March, so you can see we really have to get a jump on things!

Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours 09.08.2019

Just like humans some members of our pack have allergies A few of our husky heroes have developed a sensitivity to straw, which we use as bedding during the late fall and winter months. To accommodate their health needs and ensure their highest comfort we’ve put guide, and resident handy man, Derrick to work! He’s fabricated insulated panels that fit nicely along the inside of the dogs’ houses. We also add fresh pine and cedar shavings and change them regularly to give them that extra coziness over the winter months.
