For 25 years an entire generation Neskantaga has been without clean water, living under a boil water advisory. Here is my question in calling on Ford to transform discriminatory justice system in fly-in First Nations communities.
One of my toughest days as MPP was last year. I had gone to KI two days after family of five perished in a house fire. There was little or no access to funding for fire suppression equipment and training and very few solutions for those issues. In Neskantanga, today is 9,378th day of their ongoing boil water advisory in their community. There is a mental health crisis across our communities. ... In the Kenora jail, 95% of inmates are Indigenous people. We do not have high schools in all First Nations communities. Incremental change through limited program based funding perpetuates colonialism in our communities without truly acknowledging treaties or self-determination. We can do more and I will continue to push for a better Kiiwetinoong.
