Hashtags are an integral part of any successful #Instagram Strategy. Used correctly, hashtags can increase your post reach and introduce your brand to broader audiences. However, used incorrectly they can not only be ineffective and appear spammy, but could get you penalized by Instagram’s Algorithm. ... Like all things, to use hashtags successfully you first need to have a deeper understanding of how they work... Hashtags let you get discovered by anyone looking at that specific hashtag. The Recent Posts category is a real-time feed of all content with a given hashtag. This means that while it is getting your post in front of an audience outside of your accounts followers, your post can get buried relatively quickly by others using this same hashtag. The Top Posts tab is what you are always aiming for. Browsers will see this as authoritative, and it will most likely be there for a longer period of time - and therefore generate more impressions and interactions for you. Since more popular hashtags have more posts competing for the top spots, you don’t want to use too many of (or only) them on your posts if you are a smaller account. (1.2B posts for #Instagood might seem appealing, but if you’re not a huge account you have an almost non-existent chance of getting on the #TopPosts page.) Ideally you want to use hashtags that are an appropriate size for your account, with a few smaller and larger ones thrown in the mix. The purpose of this is to rank for the smaller/less popular/more niche hashtags, which will get you the engagement you need to be more competitive for the top spots of larger hashtags.
