SCS and Soongduk students are continuing to build their relationship this year with a virtual gift box exchange. Students and staff filled a box with small cultural items and sent it to each other and then weeks later met online to talk about the significance of the items. If all goes well, we will culminate our experience by visiting Soongduk and home staying with many of these students in August!

This year we will introduce the Modern Band program to our young musicians in grade 47. Modern Band was created by Little Kids Rock, an organization that transforms lives by restoring, expanding, and innovating music education in schools across the USA. This summer Mrs. Locken and Mrs. Mahon completed their Modern Band training and are the first teachers on the West coast of Canada to be certified Modern Band instructors. #scsMusic #scs2020 #scsFleetwood #ukulele Modern Band teaches kids to perform, improvise and compose using the popular styles that they know and love including rock, pop, reggae, hip hop, R&B and other modern styles. Modern Band classes feature guitar, ukulele, bass, keyboard, drums, vocals, technology, and computers.

On Friday, September 25th the grade 7 class at Cloverdale Campus had the privilege of spending some time with Joseph Dandurand (Kwantlen Nation). Joseph shared some of his original stories with the class and helped facilitate the Blanket Exercise. Through their time together the students of 7T were able to build community as well as deepen their understanding of the colonization of Turtle Island. The orange shirt in Orange Shirt Day refers to the new shirt that was given to Phyllis Webstad by her grandmother for her first day of school at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school in British Columbia. When Phyllis got to school, they took away her clothes, including her new shirt. It was never returned. To Phyllis, the colour orange has always reminded her of her experiences at residential school and, as she has said, how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared an...d I felt like I was worth nothing. All of us little children were crying and no one cared. The message that Phyllis wants to pass along on Orange Shirt Day and every day is that every child matters. Orange Shirt Day was started by Phyllis to educate people about residential schools and fight racism and bullying.
