No one denies that Bill C-7 opens up access to medically assisted suicide in the name of respect and compassion, but we should remember that oppression has a habit of being packaged as a benefit for the oppressed. Bill C-7, which proposes to expand access to Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to persons whose natural death is not reasonably foreseeable, has been passed in the House of Commons and is being brought to the Senate this Friday. National disability advocates warn... that this bill dangerously targets disabled people, offering assistance in dying as a substitute for assistance in living. We encourage you to read about this bill and join us in contacting our regional senators to request that the process be slowed down, that people with disabilities be meaningfully consulted, and that the bill be scrutinized through a human rights lens. We’ve put a sample letter to build off of in the comments. https://policyoptions.irpp.org//bill-c-7-assisted-dying-a/

Everything comes at its proper time This week, Kayla and Yousef are joined by Jeff Thomas, a Governor General Award-winning Indigenous photographer. Jeff provides us with some background on his photographic work which began in the 1970s as a response to the representation of Indigenous people through historical photography, and how it has grown and changed since becoming disabled. Jeff talks about turning photographs used for propaganda into tools of revitalization, and how... he’s trying to continue the storytelling tradition in his family, blending this with new technologies such as 3D scanning and drones. In his work 'Indians on Tour,' Jeff explains how he plays with Indigenous presence where it wouldn’t otherwise be visible, by photographing miniature figurines all over the world. What I encountered on my path looking for assistance was a predefined colonial view of what Indigenous art was made of: leather, sinew and beads were fundedpacking tape was not. It was only recently that funding agencies relaxed this definition to include non-traditional materials. Former Tangled Artist, Michel Dumont, shares his experiences navigating the arts world as an Indigenous person living with a disability in Canadian Art. Tangled is conducting paid interviews with artists and audience members as part of an evaluation and exploration of our online presence, accessibility, and community. We, along with everyone else, are feeling the impacts of the shut down. Along with many other arts organizations we are working to shift our programming in response to the shifting habits (and experiences) of our artists and community members. We would like your input to assist us with this shift. For more information on how to get involved, and to view our ASL vlog of this call, click the link below:
