Our awesome customer Lorraine just sent us this picture of Murray: "I thought you might enjoy this photo of my cat Murray. I did not stage it. After unloading my groceries on the kitchen island I turned around and there he was ..... in the bag!!"... Thanks for sharing Lorraine - Murray is our kind of kitty!
Our Downtown has never looked better. Thanks to Kyle Hislop for this great video, and for highlighting The Book Man in it! We love Downtown Chilliwack, and have been in its heart for 30 years. Amble down and grab a pint at Bricklayer Brewing or Fieldhouse Brewing Company, and come for a browse 12-5 tomorrow. That's right, we're open on Sundays, but it's a Chilliwack *secret*. We don't post our Sunday hours on Google to keep things chill and for our locals who are out walking around/exploring our 'hood to discover. See you soon! We have STACKS of delicious books, waiting just for you.
We are proud to partner with The Chilliwack Chiefs to promote literacy in our community. Enjoy a little story time with one of their hardworking players!
We are open from 10-5 at both branches! Feel free to come by for a relaxing browse. *All visitors are required to wear a mask in-store, regardless of age. Visitors too young for masks will be welcomed back in-store down the line. We appreciate your understanding and grace as we work to keep our communities safe. We offer curbside pickup for anyone unable to wear a mask.
As is Book Man tradition for almost two decades, we will read In Flander's Fields aloud at both of our branches at 11:09, and observe a minute of silence at 11:11. We thank our Veterans for our freedoms. Currently we have comparatively small sacrifices to recognize all that they have done for us. Please join us in protecting our community by following Public Health Orders and doing everything in our collective power to bend the curve. Please reach out to the seniors in your... lives tomorrow, Veterans or not. Make sure that they have what they need, tell them your stories, and listen to theirs. Lest we forget.
We meant to post this first thing, but today has been wild! Release day is today! $17.99, limited copies.
2020 is a strange one. We had the party of the year planned to properly celebrate hitting our 30th year of having a bookstore in Historic Downtown Chilliwack. Alas, Covid had different plans for us all. We love what we do, and we love our community. Our owner Amber Price and her father David Short have spent 30 years building The Book Man together. David and his wife Mary bought the bookstore with a hope and dream of what it might become, and it has been an unexpected an...d amazing journey. Who could have guessed that there would be cats or that Amber was going to add a second branch in Abbotsford? That our staff would grow in size so much? While the adventure continues, we are so grateful for these past 30 years of sharing our love for books with our valued Chilliwack clients. Thank you for choosing our family business as your community bookstore. And don't worry..... We will throw that party when this is behind us! Happy 30 years of bookstore bliss!
GIVEAWAY! Dug and Mary Designs have partnered with us to giveaway one of their gorgeous Amethyst bracelets! Handmade here in Chilliwack, this bracelet is made of amethyst with one black lava bead (essential oils can be applied to this stone for all day release). Their designer chose Amethyst for this piece for its soothing and calming properties - it's known to ease anxiety, and the lava stone has grounding principles.... We also carry a wide range of their handmade jewelry (necklaces and bracelets) in our "Crystal Cabinet" where you'll find Rune Stones, Chakra and Crystal books, Pendulums and Tea Reading merchandise and more. To Enter: 1. LIKE Dug and Mary Designs's page. 2. Comment below and TAG a friend. 3. LIKE the post. 4. SHARE the post. ALL steps must be completed for a valid entry. The winner will be announced at 9am on Dug and Mary Designs's Facebook page. Good luck!
The Book Man was a proud participant in Chilliwack Mural Festival 2020. We commissioned an awesome mural by Mavik on the back of our building, and our owner Amber Price directed the festival. We are always looking for ways to give back, and so we created a hashtag contest for the festival. We pledged 50 for each #chilliwackmuralfestival on Instagram to be donated in art supplies to Central Elementary - our neighbouring school. When The Wash Gang heard of the initiative th...ey offered to match that! All in all there were 180 hashtags, but truth be told, we went a little wild at the dollar store, and bought three boxes worth of goodies. Pompoms, seashells, stickers and stencils, pipe cleaners, a bucket load of googly eyes, buttons, ribbons, butterflies and dragonflies, glitter glue, Halloween sparkles and more. These boxes are teeming with joy and fun waiting to be had! 2020 is a year to lift each other up. To reach out and do things that touch your heart, and your community. All of us have the capacity to make a difference, to connect, and to make this year bright despite all of its challenges. Big or small, all acts of kindness make our communities better places to live! We're better together! Thanks again to The Wash Gang for joining us for this fun undertaking, and all of the artists and organizations that made Chilliwack Mural Festival Possible. A huge shout out to Chilliwack Community Arts Council, Tourism Chilliwack, City of Chilliwack, Chilliwack Economic Recovery Network and Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation for sponsoring the event!
What a fantastic initiative!!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We are so grateful for our clients, our kitties and for books, of course!!! We are open from 10-5 at both of our branches.
Today one of our dear clients came to visit for the first time in awhile. He has been lying low after heart surgery, has made a full recovery, and is getting out and about again. He carefully parked his scooter, donned his mask and came inside with his cane to steady him. Guess what he was coming to pick up? Even when you are 97 (yes, you read that right) you can be inspired and lifted up by the greatness of RBG. He was so pleased with his purchase, and gave as good as he got in the friendly banter exchanged as we loaded his new book into his scooter basket. Every day holds magic if you know when to pause and take it in. Take the time to chat with the seniors in your community, they may very well shock and delight you.

These past few months have been rather challenging for small businesses. We want to take a moment to say THANK YOU to our valued clients for their patience, grace and understanding as we have implemented our new policies and procedures. Also a huge thank you to WCB for working so hard to keep everyone safe. It means the world to us that so many people are choosing kindness. Together, we will get through this strange time.... Choose kindness. Remember that staff everywhere are working hard to keep their communities safe and are worthy of your respect and grace. Thank you for continuing to choose The Book Man as a valued part of your community's landscape. We appreciate your support so much!
With all of the new improvements Downtown, we are ready to change out our tired awning to keep things looking sharp! We're excited to do another project with Kinetic Signs and Awnings Ltd - their work is second to none. We'll be going with popular opinion on this one! What do you think? Navy blue? Or Black?
Our building in Chilliwack was built in 1890, making its structure 130 years old. We are constantly investing in small to large jobs to maintain and restore our building. It's part of our commitment to creating a welcoming, well maintained space that reflects our commitment to excellence. These steps were just replaced by our amazing Handy Man, Sam Rytter. Sam has done an incredible job of caring for our building, and ensuring that jobs big and small all receive the same ...amount of care, hard work and attention to detail. The mural above is part of our largest mural yet, done by Mavik of Supreme Tattoos in Downtown Chilliwack. We love his work, and now have three of his murals gracing our building to give it an interesting and artistic finish. So here's a shout-out, to our Handy Man Sam, and the artists that have helped us put the shine on this ol' gal of a building. Here's to many more years of making things better and brighter at The Book Man.
Feeling bored on this rainy day? Call and make a browsing appointment, or simply drop on by and we can likely fit you in! After many months of implementation and practice, our safety protocols and procedures are iron-clad, and we feel confident about having more people visit our store at the same time. We are permitted to have up to four people in Chilliwack, and two people in Abbotsford at a time. Masks that cover your mouth and nose are respectfully required, and all visitors must be cold/flu symptom free. You can expect the same from our staff for a safe, and relaxing browsing experience.
This chair was found in a secondhand shop in The Netherlands!!! So rad!!!
Wishing our owner Amber a very Happy Birthday today! Amber had been with the store full time for 22 years, and has now owned the store for a decade. She believes in the power of connection and community, and brings gratitude, a strong work ethic and vision to all that she does. She believes that people are better together. She sends her thanks to her staff for standing by her during this strange time, and her profound thanks to the communities of Chilliwack and Abbotsford ...for continuing to see The Book Man as a valued part of their community's landscape. Many happy returns, Amber! *Mural by Mavik, designed by Carter Ruffle, photograph by Amanda McEwan
