Story of Frank Bond, re-creating memories of his great grandpa 100 years later, My great-grandpa, Frank Jennings Bond, was conscripted into Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) in February, 1918. On April 3, he disembarked the Canadian Pacific Liner Missanabie in Liverpool. A five-week stay in the Bramshott hospital with tonsillitis delayed his arrival to the front until November 2, 1918. Luckily, his unit, The Second Canadian Mounted Rifles, was being relieved from front ...line duty that very day. Private Bond survived the Great War without firing a shot. He is pictured on the steps of the family home at 23 Edith Avenue in West Toronto Junction. Brothers Dan and Richard on his right and left, Mom Rebecca on the porch. His father John had recently died on January 1, 1919. You wouldn’t know it to look at my great-great grandma. She is happy to have her youngest child back safely. The photo was taken on March 21, 1919. (Picture on the left) In January of this year, my Dad contacted the current owner of 23 Edith Avenue, Kathleen Mullen, to ask if we could reenact the photo for its 100th anniversary. Kathleen enthusiastically agreed. We gathered at her home on March 19, 2019. My mom, Patricia Darmon, is on the porch. I (Frank Bond), am flanked by my cousins Matthew and Cameron Bond. (Picture on the right) Many thanks to the Flag Shop in Toronto for their help with the flags. Special thanks to Paul Longo Photographer for his expertise. Most importantly, thanks to the thousands of brave Canadian soldiers who did not survive the Great War. Most of them never got to be grandfathers." #FlagShoptoronto #Flagstoronto #GTA #thesix #flags #familymemories #recreatepictures #Tdot
