Letter from the Publisher April 25, 2018 Seasons of change... BY DAVE NEEGAN, President -Norwest Printing and Publishing Norwest Printing has been the publisher of the Northern Sun News since October 2015 and during that time we have enjoyed bringing the residents of Red Lake and Ear Falls insight into the politics, the businesses and the social culture of their community on a weekly basis. Small-town newspapers in Canada are facing the same challenges that major print outlets are. As the media marketplace evolves we are seeing a steady decline in advertising. As this is our only source of revenue we are constantly looking at how we can reorganize and reduce our costs. When we purchased the Northern Sun News three years ago, Norwest Print also acquired The Dryden Observer, which has been publishing in the Dryden for over 100 years. We believe that these papers are an institution in their respective communities and are committed to ensuring that each community is serviced by a publication that brings local news to its readers. However, we have come to a point in the evolution of our product when we need to make some changes to succeed in the electronically driven media world. I would like to take this opportunity now to share with our readers our plans for the immediate future. As of May 2nd the Northern Sun News will be merging its administration and print product with The Dryden Observer. The two newspaper operations will become one, sharing human resources more than they ever have before. The Red Lake/Ear Falls content will be linked with that of Dryden, Ignace, and Vermillion Bay in a one-stop shop publication for the Northwest. Don’t despair the Northern Sun News will still appear on local shelves. You will just need to flip it over to access The Dryden Observer. Our outreach team has been working on a concept that we are very pleased with and are anxious to unveil next month. Anyone who has come by our office in the last couple weeks will know that we are undergoing some additional changes. With the shared resources we are moving to a smaller office space in the same building and will remain at the same contact information (see publication banner below). We appreciate our readers patronage and ask for patience as we undergo this transition. Our team of dedicated professionals is eager to maintain our client relationships and trouble-shoot any challenges that arise as we move forward.
