While every New Year brings the promise of better things, I can safely say that having 2020 in our rear view mirror brings to mind the saying "things couldn't get much worse". 2020 was a horrible year for every community we serve. All around us are examples of our community members suffering though what 2020 given us. Good riddance 2020. Hello 2021! We have many things to be grateful for and to look forward to. Incredibly, the medical community has managed to develop vacc...ines that will keep us all safe. Our local medical communities have done incredible jobs of tending to our sick and vulnerable and we've all come to realize how important our local Health Units are in keeping us safe. Thank goodness for them. Thank goodness also for our staff who have worked tirelessly through crazy times. Early on we weren't certain what was the best course of action other than to lock the doors and keep each other safe while still serving the community we've built over the last 23 years. In those 23 years I can honestly say it was the best business decision I've ever made. I can safely say that we will not open to the public until our local Health Unit declares that the Pandemic is under control, likely through widespread vaccination. Realistically, this is not likely to happen until late in the Autumn. We are very pleased that our customers have embraced ordering Online, many for the very first time! Every time we see familiar names come across the screen, we are reminded of how much we miss seeing everyone, and are grateful to still be a part of your coffee routine. We have just introduced a new 5 LB compostable bag. We have eliminated the laminated valved bag and now all of our North Roast Coffees are available only in Compostable Bags. These bags are heat sealed and easy to open (like a cookie bag), but are easily broken down in our city compost facility. Even better, the bag is made of recycled kraft paper, even further reducing the footprint. We are not letting covid-19 impact our efforts to lead Kingston in environmentally responsible business practices, and have one more big change planned for the year to further reduce our carbon footprint. We often get asked, "How are you guys doing?" since the covid-19 restrictions took hold. While most of our wholesale customers have struggled against the heavy weight of the near complete shutdown of the foodservice industry, we've managed quite well by pivoting to online sales and Free Local Delivery. Our July was an absolute knock out month for us and we've completed almost 4000 deliveries to Kingston and Area since the covid restrictions were announced! We know the balan...ce of this year and the cold winter months are going to remain challenging for all businesses, especially those involved in the retail trade and we've already had to deal with the permanent closure of some wholesale customers doors. We want everyone to know that we've been planning for all contingencies, and that keeping our customers and each other safe is our prime objective. Our doors will remain closed to the public for at least the balance of the year in order to ensure our protective bubble remains firm. We're very excited to be bringing in new micro-lot coffees from the best growers in the world, and to converting all 5 lb coffee bags to be compostable. While we congratulate all businesses that are opening after restrictions were enforced to contain covid-19, we are currently not prepared to re-open our doors to the public. Since March 16 we’ve been safely roasting and packaging behind locked doors, while delivering and offering Secure Pick Up of fresh roasted coffee to our customers. The act of operating as a food processor safely has required the creation of new rules and protocols to protect our staff and customers. T...he careful processes we enacted to ensure a completely sanitized environment are not things that we feel we can continue while opening our doors. It is for this reason that we are NOT easing restrictions, and will instead continue to offer Free Delivery to Kingston and Area, and Secure Contactless Pick Up at our Roastery on Progress Avenue.
