Speech Language Network 26.12.2020

This past year has been one for the books! As I reflect on 2020, I am proud of the resilience demonstrated by the Speech Language Network team, the trust of our clients and families, and the efforts put forth by our community during a global pandemic. People rose to the challenge and demonstrated true strength in adapting to new realities. As we move forward into the new year, I am excited to share a few things; SLN welcomed Jessica Liao, a new Reg. Speech Language Patholog...ist to the team in November 2020. She has brought a wealth of expertise, creativity and innovativeness to her therapies and our team over the past few months. We are eager to see what 2021 holds for her. The SLN team has been actively involved in several professional development courses throughout 2020. They are looking forward to using this new information and resources as a way to continue to provide the best evidence based practices and support for children and adults throughout 2021. In addition to our direct services, SLN will have nine group programs commencing January 2021 at the SLN office for children and adults. Registration closed Friday January 9th, 2021. To our amazing clients and families, thank you for your ongoing commitment to our services and programming. We are looking forward to keeping the discoveries and innovations from this past year and getting back to some of the things we have missed when we can. Let 2021 bring more hope, more adventure, and MORE HUGS when possible! Dance Elements & Our Transitional Communication Social Group = a complete BLAST! This past week our Transitional Social Language Group hit up Dance Elements for a class filled with cardio (what's with the burpees & P90X workout to start Miss Kate? ha ha), expression, creativity and HIP HOP moves! Within 45 mins Miss. Kate had everyone moving, laughing and dancing to the first part of a routine and at one point, one of the awesome participants took the lead! Everyone's ...hearts were FULL and we couldn't wipe the smiles off everyone's faces if we tried! This may not seem like a big deal to many, but it was. Many of our participants have difficulties transitioning to new places, trying new things and expressing themselves. AND GUESS WHAT - each one of them did! We attribute this to the kind, inclusive nature of Dance Elements and also to the fact that the instructor carried on her teaching as she typically would. She made a few tweaks but challenged each and everyone to rise to the occasion. CLEARLY we went and celebrated by crushing BURGERS and MILKSHAKES at GUD EATS next door WELL DONE Dance Elements and the Transitional Social Communication Group! You rocked it. Hello everyone. It's Kara and I hope each and everyone of you is having an amazing Thanksgiving and getting in a little R and R. I came across this quote not too long ago and it not only resonated with me but it reminded me of a conference I attended over 15 years ago. At this conference there was a bonus session over the noon hour on, mindfulness. I attended. The topic was gratitude and the power it can have over our mindset at any given time in our lives. The prese...nter asked us to write down a list of everyone and anyone that had helped, supported and/or taught us in our lives starting with our earliest memories. Seriously I thought? My earliest memories until NOW? So I started. 1. 3 or 4 years old, YELLOW swimming lessons (back when we had colours :) ) - Ross (AKA, Ross the Boss - he was great and could do the Hokey Pokey like nobody's business). 2. My brothers (who were a lot older than me) - always helping me with something - teaching me how to tie my shoes, how to ride a bike and throw a ball. Skip a few years.... 3. Grade 5 - Mr. Kent Anderson - Community Basketball. He taught me how to shoot, dribble with both hands, do layups and how to score on the right net after half time (sigh). 4. Grade 6 - Broken leg, cast up to my thigh for weeks. All my amazing elementary school friends that wheeled me around in a wheelchair and made sure I still got to the park and CIRCLE-K for a slush. 5. Grade 7 - the very kind people that returned my beloved cat Smokey to me after he had been missing for two weeks. You get the point. In that noon hour, I wrote down well over one hundred individuals and I could have written more. Teachers, coaches, dance instructors, family friends, my own friends, people who volunteered their time, professors - YOU NAME IT. This task was fascinating and brought on an incredible wave of emotions and gratitude. Moral of the story is that in this roller coaster of life always do your best to have the "Attitude of Gratitude!" You are loved and if you get a moment in the next day or two I would encourage you to reach out and thank one of the individuals that may be on your list! Happy Thanksgiving, Kara & the SLN team #attitudeofgratitude #writeitdown #reflectonthegood #whohassupportedyou #youareloved #bethankful #connectionisourgreatestgift #thanksgiving2020 #grateful @theslnspeechpathsaskatoon
