The girls have been enjoying what little fall we have left... We’ve been doing a lot of winter prep: -moving ponies to the barnyard, for the winter.... -setting up our winter watering systems. -taking down gates. -dragging the barnyard (so it’s nice and even for snow plowing) -putting poly up on the chicken runs. -blowing out water lines. -adding bedding to barns (specifically, the pigs get a huge pile of straw to burrow in). -cleaning out summer pony sheds and dragging the summer paddock. Winter in Northwestern Ontario ain’t no joke, son! Lol. Friday is for FARM TRUTHS: We sold the last of our pasture-raised chickens and would you believe that we only made $70? When taking into account, cost per chick (58), 8 weeks of feed, and processing costs (abattoir), that was our takeaway. That also doesnt include bags, labels, electricity (heat lamps), or time. The more we try product-based options, we are finding that unless you are raising/growing things in large numbers, you arent making much profit (zero profit when y...ou factor in time). We are unsure whether we will raise more, for sale, next year or not; we are going to play with numbers and feed options to see if/how we can make a profit and then decide if its worth our time and effort.
