We're raising money for the EMPTY STOCKING FUND! In the midst of COVID-19, we think it is vital to celebrate our joyous moments. To that end, Felicità (our student ballet ensemble) is sharing this video of Waltz of the Flowers, from the famous ballet, The Nutcracker. If you are inspired by our video, please make a donation to the Empty Stocking Fund on the day of the broadcast. Or, if you would like to do it right NOW, please send an electronic money transfer to [email protected] with memo ESF; we will pass along all donations we receive. We hope you will enjoy, and share, this video. Thanks for watching!

Summer at The Studio begins July 7th. We can't wait to dance with you again soon!
Today, this beautiful lady, Syreeta Hector, joined us at The Studio SJ from Toronto via FB live. I love Syreeta’s view of activism through non-violence, and her... optimism about education. This remarkable, intelligent, honest, loving person gives me hope that we CAN make our world a better place. You can hear her at the beginning of our video. First we talked/listened, and then we did Parking Lot Ballet Class. Then it rained in T.O. and the cold fog rolled in to SJ. #studentandteacherwithrolesreversed Ps. Beautiful words from Andrea Scott Warning, this is a looooong post. But the topic is deserving. I remember, in the shadow of September 11, 2001, the heavy feeling of climbing the stairs to our ballet studio in the vault of the Gothic Arches. The peaks of the stained glass windows had lost their splendour, and teaching ballet seemed excruciatingly silly. At the hands of terrorists, thousands of people had lost their lives, thousands more had their... lives ruined, and firefighters were digging through the rubble to rescue survivors. My work felt absurdly frivolous. Until a ballet dad, who was a firefighter with the SJFD, made me see it differently. It was nearly 20 years ago, these are not his exact words, but essentially he told me that firefighters and other responders would have no reason to do what they do if there weren’t people in the world doing what I was doing. The arts, and other beautiful things that give meaning to life, even though they felt trivial in the wake of 911, were inspiration for the actions of those courageous heroes. I’m getting to my point. When I first heard about Blackout Tuesday I didn’t understand how not having a ballet class would help the cause. But out of respect and love for my black students, friends, family, and heroes, I willingly Blacked Out on June 2. Was my passive participation significant? Doubtful. Did it help the cause? Maybe. Have I been thinking about it ever since? Yes. I will never understand. I don’t have answers. But I have ideas. I am very privileged to work in a dance studio, and maybe if I make little changes I can be a nanoscopic part of the solution. To my fellow artists, teachers, and coaches, we have been entrusted with more social power than we realize. Lets consciously and actively try to use our power and privilege to make a difference. Yesterday we blacked out. Today and tomorrow let’s think about what more we can do to eliminate racism from our studios, our community, and our world. To my black students, friends, family, and heroes, I love you, and would embrace your advice. Ps. This video clip needs no introduction.
We are thrilled to have Syreeta Hector join us virtually on Friday! Fridays Parking Lot class will be live streamed on Facebook!

To my students who might be getting bored(to anyone who might be getting bored): The Studio is posting activities online to keep you moving and active from the ...confines of your own house/yard. You will find other great resources online too if you look. 1) Here is a dance-related activity to keep your critical thinking skills active and healthy... Watch these two videos (don’t worry, they’re short) and then post your comments; likes, dislikes, compare & contrast, what can you find out about them online? 2a) Creative activity... compose your own work that follows the same theme as the videos I posted for you. 2 b ) create a visual art work that could be used as a backdrop for either or both of these works. https://youtu.be/X5H73l4r1zs https://youtu.be/BwwqA4iCV60
