Feeling Blue? As we head into the colder months and spend more time indoors, not to mention the stress induced by COVID-19, our lack of exposure to sunlight can contribute to increased mood swings Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that occurs during the same season each year, usually in the winter when we're least exposed to the sun. The symptoms can interfere with how you function daily. However, the disorder can be treated effectively with a he...alth care provider. Studies show that SAD has been linked to "a biochemical imbalance in the brain prompted by shorter daylight hours and less sunlight in winter. As seasons change, people experience a shift in their biological internal clock or circadian rhythm that can cause them to be out of step with their daily schedule. SAD is more common in people living far from the equator where there are fewer daylight hours in the winter." If you have any of these symptoms, speak to one of our healthcare providers today on our website to discuss possible treatment options. (2020, October). With so many contraception options available, making the right decision about which birth control method is right for you can be overwhelming. We spoke with Dr. Sharon Laval, who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology about how she advises patients to navigate this decision. To book an appointment with Dr. Laval, please visit Tiahealth.com Q: From IUDs to oral pills, patches, and more, what should a patient consider before deciding which birth control method to use? A:... There are many things to consider before choosing the right birth control, which is why I always conduct a thorough history. For example, I will ask whether they have anemia, acne, increased hair growth, painful periods, PMS? Do they have migraines with aura? If so, they cannot be on birth control with estrogen. Are they afraid of needles? If so, they would not want Depo Provera. Do they have problems with swallowing pills? They might want to try the patch or the ring. There is an excellent website that I direct my patients to when they are looking for birth control options. It is called "Itsaplan.ca" and it lists all the contraceptive options which are currently available in Canada, with benefits and risks in an easy to understand format for further reading and reference. It also has an interactive section to help a person decide which option is right for them. Before prescribing birth control, I always conduct a history with my patients to guide me in recommending which method would work best. Ultimately, the final decision is up to the patient! . . . . #birthcontrol #birthcontrolmethod #contraception #tiahealth #virtualhealthcare #telemedicine #obstetrics #gynecology #gynecology #contraceptionoptions See more

On #WorldDiabetesDay, we celebrate the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, the famous Canadian doctor that co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best and John James Rickard Macleod in 1922. Although insulin is not a cure for diabetes, it allows millions of people to manage this lifelong condition. Frederick Grant Banting was born in 1891 in Alliston, Ontario the youngest of five children of William Thompson Banting and Margaret Grant. After studying medicine at the Unive...rsity of Toronto, in 1916 he enrolled in the Canadian Army Medical Corps and went to serve as a medical officer during the First World War in France. Upon returning to Canada in 1919 when the war ended, Banting began practicing medicine and it was during these next few years that became deeply interested in diabetes. He began research with Charles Best in John MacLeod's laboratory in 1921, suspecting that another substance formed in the pancreas, trypsin, broke down the insulin. By 1922, they confirmed that insulin was immediately effective for treating diabetes, enabling millions of lives to be saved. In 1923, Banting was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine which he shared with Macleod. #Explainer What are antibodies and how do they help keep our bodies safe? Our friends at Dynacare broke it down for us perfectly: "Antibodies are microscopic proteins made by the blood cells when your body fights off an infection. Antibodies may protect you from getting the same disease again. For example, when you get sick with chickenpox or receive the chickenpox vaccine, your blood cells respond by making antibodies that protect you from getting it in the future. This is... how immunity happens, although it doesn’t occur with all diseases. A positive antibody test result may indicate previous or current exposure to an illness but should NOT be used to infer immunity status or infectivity. It is unknown whether COVID-19 antibodies indicate protective immunity and for how long." To learn more about how you can receive a COVID-19 antibody test requestion with Tia Health, please visit dynacare.ca/covid19-antibody-test . . . . . #medicalnews #medicalfacts #antibodies #whatareantibodies #viruses #viralinfection

We are so excited to announce that Tia Health is partnering with Dynacare to provide our patients access to SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Antibody Testing in Ontario. As of today, patients will be able to find out whether they have had COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) in the past, with a highly accurate blood test. Available from Dynacare with a doctor’s requisition, the test checks for the presence of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) antibodies in the blood. When these antibodies are found, it means that there was a previous COVID-19 infection. Learn more at dynacare.ca/covid19-antibody-test Disclaimer: This test can be done 14 days or more after an active infection. It will not tell you if you have COVID-19 right now, and a negative result does not entirely rule out previous exposure.

We'll admit it, #workingfromhome can feel isolating and stressful at times, with lines between personal life and work-life blurring. According to Dr.Edema, the main issues with working from home and the impacts on one's mental and physical health can be the following: 1. Sense of physical and emotional isolation 2. Diminished support from colleagues and managers 3. Difficulties with creating boundaries between work time and personal time which could generate its own stress... 4. Danger of working longer hours at home 5. Nagging anxiety of possible job loss from the feeling of perhaps not doing as much as one would do in the office setting 6. Lesser likelihood for exercise. Swipe to read Dr. Edema's top tips on how to combat stress and anxiety as we remain #outofoffice to help stop the spread. To book an appointment with Dr. Edema, please visit https://buff.ly/3nOX8pV

Just because summer is over, doesn't mean we shouldn't still be keeping an eye out for any sunspots or new moles that appear on our skin. Although most moles are noncancerous or benign, developing a new mole or sudden changes to existing ones on the body can be a tell-tale sign of melanoma in adults. #TestYourKnowledge and let us know in the comment section below which of the photos you think is melanoma and which ones are moles. The Canadian Cancer Society says that the ABC...DE rule below can help you look for the common signs and symptoms of melanoma skin cancer. Please see your doctor if you have any of these changes on your skin: "A is for asymmetry One-half of a mole does not have the same shape as the other half. B is for border The edge of a mole is uneven (irregular). It can look jagged, notched or blurry. The colour may spread into the area around the mole. C is for colour The colour of a mole is not the same throughout. It could have shades of tan, brown and black. Sometimes areas of blue, grey, red, pink or white are also seen. D is for diameter The size of a mole is larger than 6 mm (1/4 inch) across, which is about the size of a pencil eraser. E is for evolving There is a change in the colour, size, shape or feel of the mole. The mole may become itchy or you may have a burning or tingling feeling."
