Pearson is known as Canada’s largest and busiest airport, but did you know we also have an impressive art collection that features Canadian and international artists? Unique and interesting art can be found throughout both terminals, with some pieces being one-of-a-kind, designed specifically for Pearson, such as Tilted Spheres by Richard Serra. This massive steel sculpture had to be assembled prior to completion of Terminal 1 due to its size. If you aren't travelling for essential reasons now, you can still enjoy our gallery online! https://tpia.co/3306TrA
We’ve introduced a new technology to help passengers with hearing loss. Hearing loops are a special type of sound system for use by people with hearing aids or Cochlear implants. They work by cutting out unwanted background noise as sound goes directly into the hearing aid. https://tpia.co/3bjr1L8

After 21 years of serving the airport community as the Chaplain of Toronto Pearson, Peter King is moving on to a well-deserved retirement. Peter calls the airport his home and sees the chapel as a place where he has fulfilled his passion of helping others meet their spiritual or emotional needs. They provide a place for people to reflect, pray, and spend some quiet time amid the hustle and bustle of the airport, he describes. Today, we extend our gratitude to Peter for his service and wish him well in his next chapter. #PeopleofPearson

My dad was in the US Navy and we were stationed in Italy. Every summer, my younger brother and I flew unaccompanied back to the States. As a young child, flying alone, I fell completely under the spell of the magic of air travel. My first job in aviation was for Continental Airlines, as a pricing and revenue analyst. I learned the business of air travel. I was so committed that I used my days off to fly my own markets and observe the passengers to learn about their flying h...abits. As the President of FlySwoop, an ultra-low-cost carrier, I like to say that we stay ‘maniacally cost-focused’ to give passengers the best value. We depart earlier in the morning or later at night. We have more seats on the aircraft and passengers only pay for what they use. As a result, our costs are at least 40% lower than premium airlines. Canadians face difficult economic headwinds ahead. What Swoop brings is incredible value and we’re dedicated to making air travel financially achievable for anyone. If you want fancy extras, Swoop may not be for you. But if you want to see your family, we’ll get you there with health and hygiene as the top priority. - Charles, President of Swoop #PeopleofPearson

Five years ago today, Toronto Pearson welcomed the first flight of Syrian refugees as part of the Government of Canada’s Operation Syrian Refugees. One of the first things the newcomers experienced was a revamped, specially designed terminal to make their arrival as comfortable as possible. As Canada’s front door to the world, we’re so proud to have helped welcome them home.

I’m studying mechatronics engineering and management at McMaster University and I just finished my internship on the Greater Toronto Airports Authority’s Facility Systems Engineering team. The airport is a small city, with engineers in almost every discipline. It’s a small but powerful team of experts with a hand in almost every aspect of the airport experience. At the start of the pandemic, I began looking into our options for sanitization. UV light was a very promising te...chnology and that’s how we came to install CleanSlate UV’s smartphone disinfection units. If you’re exposed to the sun’s UV rays, you’ll get sunburned. Over time, that could become cancerous. The same thing happens to virus cells under UV light, except much quicker, breaking up the virus DNA and stopping it from replicating. That’s how CleanSlate worksit’s chemical free and it takes twenty seconds to use. That’s exciting because this is making people measurably safer and it’s also allowing you to feel more confident and in control. - Christopher, Intern, GTAA #PeopleofPearson
We’re proud to have been named Best Large Airport in North America by ACI World for the 3rd year in a row! We want to thank our passengers for voting for us and also recognize our airport employees who helped make this award possible by delivering an enhanced passenger experience.

For this month’s #PearsonPast, we’re focusing on our longest-running United Arab Emirates (UAE) partner, Etihad Airways. Etihad was the first UAE-based airline to start service to Toronto Pearson and they celebrate their 15th anniversary on October 31, 2020. Toronto Pearson is one of five North American destinations on the Etihad network and the only Canadian one! Over the years, they’ve increased their service from 3 to 5 times a week, as well as eliminated a stop-over, creating one of the first direct UAE-Toronto routes. ( John Griffith/Ken Mist)
#PearsonPartnersWeek was a huge success last week. We couldn’t have done it without the help of our generous employees who volunteered their time to take part in our many community events. Being a Zone Manager for Paradies Lagardere’s retail stores, every day is different. No matter what the day brings, the best part is always meeting new people and giving them excellent customer service. I love customer service because I’m a people person. I’ll happily go above and beyond for passengers who come to shop at the airport. It’s not just me, either. Recently, a colleague of mine ran from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 to bring a specific product to a passenger. To eve...ryone on our team, the most important thing is customer satisfaction. This holiday season, things will look different. Managing multiple outlets in my zone, I’m so used to a fast-paced environment where I’m always re-ordering products, remerchandising the stores and coaching associates. Now, it’s slower, with fewer passengers. But I get to spend more time with our customers, too. We feel more togetherness, because the rush isn’t there anymore. Knowing that our shoppers may not get the chance to shop the way they’re used to, it’s important to me that they continue to experience excellent customer service at Paradies Lagarde and that they get sense of enjoyment from shopping again. - Charlene, Paradies Lagardere, Zone Manager #PeopleofPearson
Last week, we met with Canadian innovators to discuss our ongoing efforts to create a Healthy Airport. The aviation industry has always been at the forefront of creating a safe and healthy passenger experience. Now, we’re applying that commitment to agility in response to the pandemic. Learn more about how we’re ensuring a healthy airport environment: https://tpia.co/36NehIn.
The airport industry has been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the effects acutely felt by our workersthe beating heart of any airport. The GTAA’s workforce has been reduced by 27% and similar difficult decisions are being made across the industry by our partners. These impacts reach farther, into the Airport Employment Zone around Pearson, which was once the second-largest employment area in Canada. We are grateful for the government relief provided to date, but join @unifor2002 in asking government for longer-term support to aid in the recovery of our industry. #cdnpoli

As Operations Manager for McMaster HealthLabs, I’m partly responsible for the study of internationally arriving passengers at YYZ, co-sponsored by Air Canada and Toronto Pearson. It’s my role to make sure the study’s operations work seamlessly, from start to finish. The type of testing we’re conducting is called molecular testing, where you take samples to multiply the virus and identify it, then study the structure. All our research assistants have been trained on how to i...nteract with passengers and collect samples. Any passengers that participate in the study will also be given kits to self-sample, and those samples will be couriered to our laboratory at the Research Institute of St. Joseph's Healthcare and Foundation. It has been so wonderful to be a part of this study from the beginning. It is heartbreaking to see Pearson so quiet and if this study can make a difference for Canadians, it would be amazing. Contributions are being made by both researchers and the passengers who volunteer to take part in the study. We all want to see an economic recovery and a safe return of air travel. For me, no matter what mountains we must climb, I think it would be so wonderful if we can make even a small difference. - Marion, Operations Manager, McMaster Health Labs #PeopleofPearson

My very first job at Toronto Pearson was as a hostess at Swiss Chalet, actually. Seeing everyone one in their different uniforms with bright colours, I just wanted to be part of that. Every day at Pearson is different, you never know what to expect. But once you get here, you can’t leave. In the Resource Management Unit, we’re in the background but all our decisions are felt on the frontline by passengers and airport workers. We’re responsible for fitting each aircraft ont...o a gate that matches its size and assigning baggage carousels for passengers to pick-up their luggage. It’s like a puzzle that is constantly moving and never ending. Weather can be the biggest challenge. When snowstorms or lightning affect the operation, a perfectly planned schedule needs to be remade in the moment. Since the pandemic, we’ve had to make changes to how we direct the flow of aircraft, passengers and luggage. We make sure to gate aircraft so that we don’t have two full gate lounges next to each other. An arriving aircraft will gate next to a departing aircraft so that passengers never cross paths. The first question is always, where can we space passengers out the most to maintain a healthy distance. - Astra, Resource Coordinator, GTAA #PeopleofPearson

The acorn didn’t fall far from the oak tree. My dad was in the airport business and I followed. I was a Transport Canada student intern in 1989 and never left aviation. My husband is a pilot, as well. The magic of airports, the connection that they enableit creates such a passion in me. I’ve never wanted to leave. Today, as Director of Customer and Agency Development, I make sure airlines and government agencies have what they need to successfully serve passengers. That me...ans I work closely with all 62 of our airlines, as well as CATSA, CBSA and US CBP. What I’m focusing on now is planning for futuristic technology at Pearson that welcomes travellers back to the sky. As an example, just this summer we rolled out touchless, self-serve check-in and bag drop for Air Canada passengers, and we’re looking to expand that to all our air carrier partners next. We want people to travel more smoothly and confidently. Yesterday’s airport involved stops and starts, having your boarding pass or passport scanned nearly ten times. The future looks like one seamless journey where your information is securely reviewed just once, then sent to the agencies that need it. There is a great sense of partnership at Pearson, to move into the future of healthy, efficient air travel. - Janik, Director of Customer and Agency Development, GTAA #PeopleofPearson

The Career Pathways for Women program connects skilled newcomer women to the local job market. This was the first in a series of four mentoring events. In a year that has been defined by so many challenges, this week reinforces that people are helping people and our team at Pearson cares deeply about our communities.

"I went to school first for human biology, before earning a master’s degree in occupational and environmental health. I fell into the field almost by accident, discovering how complex the field of occupational hygiene is. I ended up in consulting, working for OHE Consultants (OHE), because of my interest in fully exploring the field of occupational hygiene. Occupational hygiene looks at many different factors that can affect someone’s health and safety in a certain environme...nt. At Pearson, we’re working closely with a number of GTAA departments, and we’re looking at various controls to minimize the spread of COVID-19, by providing expert opinion and recommendations on topics that include hand sanitizer locations, disinfection of high touch areas and air quality. What creates a challenge is that the information we have on COVID-19 advances rapidly. For that reason, we are always adjusting and making tweaks based on new research. We’re spending just as much time in the passenger-facing areas of the airport as we are in the areas where employees work. As long as everyone does what it takes, being personally accountable for their safety, the measures implemented will assist in keeping the airport community safe. I want passengers and airport workers to know that Pearson is being proactive. A lot of work is being done to create a healthy environment for the return of travel, by staying at the forefront of new technologies and the latest research." - Michal, Senior Occupational Hygienist & Vice-President, OHE Consultants #PeopleofPearson
