Mental Health Week 2020 Tip of the Day: Build a social support network This is directly related to the last point in yesterday's tip. Building and maintaining a solid social support network is key to maintaining good mental health. Human beings are inherently social beings. Extensive research in the past several decades has clearly demonstrated a strong relationship between social support and good mental health. Social support network can include family, intimate partner,... friends, acquaintances, colleagues, healthcare professionals, neighbours etc. Building and maintaining a good social support network requires time and effort; but the benefits of having a strong social support network are enormous. But how do we do that in the time of social distancing? Here are some tips: . - Nurture your relationship with your partner and immediate family (those living in the same household) - Utilize social networking platforms - this is especially important right now! Use apps such as Skype, Zoom, PartyRoom etc to keep in touch with your friends and family - Avoid and let go of negative/unhealthy relationships - Improve your social skills (there are numerous online options such as toastmasters) #socialcircle #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthsupport #mentalhealthadvocate #mentalhealthquotes #endthestigma #mentalhealthstigma #mentalhealthawarenessweek #mentalwellness #breakthestigma #mentalstrength #mindset #itsokaynottobeokay #hereforyou See more

Mental Health Week 2020 . Tip of the Day: Sleep . Just as is the case with exercise and diet, there is a clear connection between sleep and mental health. You may have heard of different stages of sleep. During the various stages of sleep your body and brain function differently. For instance, during the deep sleep (stage 3) your brain activity slows down, your heart rate and body temperature drop and your body relaxes. However, at the Rapid Eye Movement (REM sleep, also know...n as dream sleep) stage of sleep the opposite happens. The brain activity picks up and resembles that of the awake state. The REM sleep is believed to help people process complex information, thereby contributing to our emotional health. Each person goes through these stages every 60 to 90 minutes. But! Turns out that the length of each stage in the 60-90 minute cycle changes as the night progresses. So if at the beginning of the night you will have longer stage 1 and 2 sleep stages toward the end of the night you will begin to have longer REM stages. In fact, the longest REM stages will occur in the 7th and 8th hours of sleep. So if you only get 5-6 hours of sleep each night you are robbing yourself of the REM sleep your brain so desperately needs to feel better. And while an occasional all-nighter will not seriously impact your mental health, consistent sleep deprivation surely might. . . . #qualitysleep #bettersleep #nervoussystem #sleephealth #stressreduction #breathingtechniques #reducestress #circadianrhythm #cortisol #Health #Healthy #Wellness #Healthylifestyle #Healthandwellness #Healthychoices #Healthytips #GetHealthy #HealthyLife #HealthTalk #MindBodySoul See more

Mental Health Week 2020 . Tip of the Day: Diet . It should come to no surprise that the food we eat affects our physical health. But as it turns out, our diet also affects our mental health. In fact, most of the serotonin (remember the happy chemical from tip number 1?) in your body is produced in your gastrointestinal tract! People who eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, unprocessed grains and seafood have significantly lower risk of depression. So turns out your folks w...ere right: eat your vegetables! . #Health #Healthy #Wellness #Healthylifestyle #Healthandwellness #Healthychoices #Healthytips #Exercise #Transformation #Workout #Getfit #Gym #Healthyfood #Cleaneating #Mealprep #Healthymeals #Eathealthy #GetHealthy #HealthyLife #HealthTalk #MindBodySoul See more

Tip of the Day: Exercise, exercise, exercise . In fact, I would make it tip 1, 2 and 3! If you are only going to take away one of the five tips, I hope it’s this one. Physical exercise works wonders for improving and maintaining good mental health. When you exercise your brain releases chemicals (neurotransmitters) that actually make you feel better. Endorphins (often referred to as natural opioids) are neurotransmitters that relieve stress and pain. Moreover, regular exerci...se improves your levels of serotonin (also known as the happy chemical). Serotonin directly contributes to our wellbeing and happiness and boosting serotonin levels improves our mood, sense of well-being, sleep and appetite. . . . . . #getreal #workplacementalhealth #employeewellness #endstigma #togetherapart #mentalhealthweek #childrensmentalhealth #parenting #mentalhealth #keepmoving #functionaltraining #workout #movement #movementismedicine #stayfocused #totaltherapybc @ Total Therapy Rehabilitation & Wellness Centre See more

We are excited to introduce Pearl Dar, our new Registered Massage Therapist at the Total Therapy Metrotown and North Burnaby clinic! We asked her some questions so you can get to know her better: 1. What do you like most about working with your clients? What I like most about working with my clients is that I feel like I'm making a difference in their day. People sometimes come to me with limited range of motion or pain, and to help alleviate some of their symptoms (even a l...ittle bit) is pretty satisfying. 2. What is your favorite thing to do outside of work? Outside of work, my life is pretty simple. During the school year, I volunteer as a Cub Scout leader with Scouts Canada. It takes up a lot of my life, but it's one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. If I'm not doing something scouting related, you can probably find me either trying out a new restaurant in this very diverse city of ours, or in the kitchen trying out some recipe I saw online and will probably fail because I can't follow a recipe to save my life. In addition to that, I love just hanging out with my friends, whether it’s going to a movie or going to one of the many conventions that Vancouver plays host to. 3. What do you like most about being a Massage Therapist? I love that each day is flexible and brings new challenges. From massages where people are caring for their general well-being to something more orthopaedic and everything in between, each person entering my treatment room presents uniquely, which can be a challenge in itself. 4. What are the most common injuries you have been treating? I see a wide variety of patients. Whether it's a woman wanting a pre/post natal massage, an ICBC patient coming in after an accident, or just someone who works in an office and has tension in their upper back, neck, and shoulders, every condition presents uniquely and challenges me in a different way.

Wishing the very best to Kinesiologist and World Champion Competitor Juan Jaramillo for his competition today in Lausanne Switzerland. Below are a few words from Juan after his last race when he won his devision in the Canadian Championships. Managed top spot at the Standard distance Canadian/provincial championships today for 25-29. Despite feeling quite fatigued on race day, I was super stoked to win my category and punch my ticket to the 2020 world championships in Edmon...ton. The swim started fast as expected and lost quite a large chunk of time coming out of the water but as soon as I got on the bike I reeled in my competitors. I didn’t expect to make up much time in the run since I had been dealing with a couple injuries in the lead up to the race and this couldn’t train my run consistently. However I surprisingly finished with a solid run split which maintained my lead that built as I got of the bike. Super pumped for the result as it gives me confidence going into worlds this September in Lausanne Switzerland! See more
