Dear Residents: To say that this is concerning would be an understatement. Please know your Town Council has been advocating to Island Health on your behalf an...d we will continue to do so. Our last conversation with them regarding the situation was on November 5th. We found out about the closure as you did, on Facebook. We understand this is distressing to many of you. I would urge you all to write your own letters and put pressure on all parties to find a solution to the current situation. Sincerely, Mayor Gaby Wickstrom Minister Dix: [email protected] MLA Michele Babchuk: [email protected] Alison Mitchell: [email protected] Dr Ben Williams: [email protected]

As of midnight tonight, masks are now mandatory in businesses and indoor public spaces. Please be kind to employees just trying to do their jobs. Try not judge ...those who are not wearing a mask. It may be due to health or personal reasons such as past trauma. We do not know what people are going through. Be kind, have grace with one another and avoid interaction if you are uncomfortable with other people’s choices. We will get through this!

To the many BC Hydro crew members who worked tirelessly to get the power back on, we thank you! To the Port McNeill public works crew, we appreciate all the ...things both in front and behind the scenes that needed to be done to make sure the town continued to operate smoothly. To town staff who answered phones, assisted residents and provided updates, thank you. To the Port McNeill Fire Rescue, Port McNeill RCMP and emergency response crews we can’t thank you enough for keeping us safe. To the many, many volunteers, company personnel, businesses and everyday citizens who cleared debris, fed people and gave your time to help where it was needed, thank you! We are blessed to live in an area that is so quick to have people pitch in and do what they can for the health and safety of their community. With deep gratitude, Mayor Gaby Wickstrom

NATIONAL FOREST WEEK Healthy Forests, Healthy Futures. Natural disturbances such as forest fires, insect and disease outbreaks, drought, wind throw and floods have occurred in Canada’s forests for thousands of years. Disturbance is part of the natural life cycle of the forest and most often helps the forest to renew itself.... Disturbances are particularly important to the cycle of regeneration and regrowth in boreal forests. Fires, as well as insect and disease outbreaks, often occur on a large scale there, more so than in Canada’s temperate forests. Here are some of the ways that these natural disturbances work to renew boreal forests. Drawing by Miles Murray, Age 9.

NATIONAL FOREST WEEK Keep our Future Growing A changing climate will affect Canada’s forests in a range of complex ways. Some effects will be sudden and dramatic and others will be gradual and subtle.... Rapid climate change will affect tree growth rates, mortality rates, disturbance patterns and the distribution of tree species after disturbances. Impacts will be cumulative and interconnected. For example, insect damage can increase the risk of wildland fires occurring; and drought can stress trees, making them more susceptible to attack by insects and disease. One thing is clear: the future will not be like the past.

NATIONAL FOREST WEEK Healthy forests mean healthy Children... Canadians across the country benefit from a vast array of economic, social and environmental outcomes from forests.... The Canadian forest sector provides quality, well-paying jobs to Canadians. Furthermore, it is a key economic engine for many communities across the country, including rural and Indigenous communities. The sector directly employed 210,615 people in 2018 foresters, scientists, engineers, computer technologists, technicians and skilled tradespeople and is responsible for an additional 91,874 indirect jobs in the rest of the economy. These jobs support 300 communities across the country. Many of these communities, often far from urban areas, would have few or no alternatives without the forest sector.
