Grief and bereavement support is an essential element of all care at the end of one’s life. This year, the CHPCA invites Canadians on a shared journey that fosters compassion and encourages them to cope with their grief by supporting each other through living and grieving. We might be physically distant, but grief brings us together. We learn to live with the loss and grief in ways that maintain and honour our bond with the person who died but don’t limit our capacity for joy..., pleasure and a meaningful life. We would like to welcome Victoria Hughes as a new Board Member at Townsend Smith Hospice Foundation. Victoria Hughes grew up in Milton and is keen to see a hospice brought to North Halton after personal experience with end-of-life care and its many layers. She currently works in asset management and is also a lawyer, having practiced corporate law at a large law firm and being in-house counsel at a multi-national pharmaceutical corporation. Victoria holds a Bachelor of Commer...ce in finance from the University of Toronto, Trinity College, and a LL.B. from the University of Western Ontario. Victoria is a mom to three kids and serves and has served on other not-for-profit boards of directors. #townsendsmithhospicefoundation

Prospective applicants who best meet our requirements will be invited to speak to some of our existing Board members in April or earlier if needed. Board Members Term of Office: The duration of terms are for a period of 3 years and terms may be renewed one further time for up to 6 years of service in total. We would like to welcome Kristina Tesser as a new Board Member at Townsend Smith Hospice Foundation. Kristina Tesser is Milton’s Ward 1 Town Councillor, practicing lawyer and licenced funeral director. She was born and raised in Milton, is married to a local business owner, Chris Derksen, and is mother to four children. During her work in funeral service, Kristina observed the positive and lasting impact that hospice care offers to families. As such, she is honoured to be par...t of the hardworking Townsend Smith Hospice Foundation Board in their mission to bring hospice to North Halton. Along with her role as a board member with TSHF, Kristina also sits as a member on the boards of Milton’s Downtown Business Improvement Area, Milton Public Library, and Milton Chamber of Commerce. Kristina is also a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women and Italian Canadian Club of Milton. She is an avid baker, traveller, jazz music lover, and history buff. #townsendsmithhospicefoundation

"Such wonderful childhood memories of me with my brother, Peter. Here we are at Rattlesnake Point. 7-year-old me looking up adoringly at my 18-year-old big brother. He fought like crazy when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It was a very dark period in our lives, watching him suffer as he was losing his battle. It was frightening for us as we all took shifts caring for him at home we didn’t know what we were doing, to be honest. Hospice was the silver lining in this... dark abyss. They supported my brother and the rest of us as well. They allowed us to stop and be present in the moment with him. It also gave us one of our most poignant memories a music therapist came in to play Elton John songs on her guitar. For that half hour, all of his pain disappeared. His body relaxed as he soaked in his favourite music and a sense of calm washed over him. Shortly thereafter, he peacefully slipped away with his family by his side. This is the type of compassionate customized care offered at hospice. Helping to make the end-of-life journey a little more manageable.
