TRIUMF is pleased to announce that the 2020 CAP-TRIUMF Vogt Medal for Contributions to Subatomic Physics has been awarded to Dr. Gordon C. Ball. Over the past two decades, Dr. Ball has led a high-impact program of superallowed Fermi beta decay studies that exploits the high-intensity, high-quality beams of rare isotopes provided by the ISAC facility at TRIUMF. Since antimatter annihilates upon contact with matter, learning how to confine and store it in our matter world was a necessary first step for experimental antimatter research. In 2011, the Antihydrogen Laser Physics Apparatus (ALPHA) announced they had created, trapped, and contained more than 300 atoms of anti-hydrogen atoms for a record-breaking 16 minutes - the world’s first prolonged look at the elusive substance. Building from that work, the ALPHA collaboration has sin...ce published a number of important papers describing the physical properties of antimatter, including several increasingly precise spectroscopic and charge measurements. Next, they're tackling how antimatter responds to gravity. The paper describing that first tremendous feat, 'Confinement of antihydrogen for 1000 seconds', has been tapped as a Nature Physics editor’s favourite admist a 15-year round-up of top papers. Our next Saturday Morning Lecture explores the Comet NEOWISE, which graced our skies on July 5, 2020. We delve into how humans gradually came to understand what comets are, where comets come from, and what happens to them in Earth’s vicinity and after they’re gone. We'll also look at what we've learned by visiting comets with spacecraft! NEOWISE won't be visible again until the year 8786, but our Saturday Morning Lecture is right around the corner on November 21st. In a significant step forward for work on TRIUMF’s Advanced Rare Isotope Laboratory (ARIEL), the first level of the ARIEL Target Pit Shielding project has been completed. The shielding, which required thirteen 9-tonne steel blocks and a special recipe of radiation-protective borated concrete, fortifies the two isotope-producing target stations and reduces the overall neutron flux.
