Bill joined the UBC Department of Civil Engineering as a faculty member in 1968 and served as Department Head from 1984 to 1992. After examining traffic and collision data for 38 highway segments in BC, Alberta and Quebec between 2008 and 2015, #UBCCivil Professor Tarek Sayed, an expert in traffic safety, and his team of researchers found a significant reduction in collisions after the width of pavement markings were increased. Unfortunately, most Canadian road authorities continue to use the narrowest recommended width-at just 4 inches-in order to minimize costs.
