Demolition of St. Michael’s Residential School in 2015 On February 18, 2015. Survivors and community members gathered for a ceremony to witness its demolition. They sang, prayed and hurled rocks at the decrepit structure as the bulldozers did their work. Also pictured is the St. Michael's school bell, and precious items and toys that were stashed in the walls of the school by children, found during demolition. The St. Michael's Residential School in Alert Bay operated from 1929-1975.
E. Beverly Brown was taken from her family home in Bella Bella/ Kitasoo in 1937 when she was seven years old and sent to St. Michael's Indian Residential School in Alert Bay. Her father had given her a Kodak camera and during her eight years at the school, Beverly and her friends took photographs of their lives at St. Mike’s. These are the only known photos in Canada that were taken by students in residential schools themselves. These photos give voice to students who were often silenced or made invisible. They are a testament to the strength and courage of the boys and girls who attended St. Mike’s and whose friendships became lifelines for one another. The individuals in the photographs have been identified where possible to acknowledge their identity and community.
It's important to remember on a day like today that "Engaging with Indian Residential School histories and legacies can lead to emotional reactions and (unexpectedly) difficult thoughts and feelings. Sometimes these can surface hours, days, or weeks later. This is perfectly normal. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, it is important to respect your needs and to be kind to yourself. " Check out the Indigenous Residental School History and Dialogue Centre's list of resources for healing and wellness. https://irshdc.ubc.ca/for-s/healing-and-wellness-resources/
Are you wearing your orange shirt today? For those of you that don't know: " Since 2013, each year on September 30th, we wear orange to honour the Residential School Survivors. We honour their experiences and the experiences of their families. Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to all come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for future generations of children." The quote is taken from The Orange Shir...t Story by Phyllis Webstad. #orangeshirtday #everychildmatters #wearyourorangeshirt #September302020 #resilience #residentialschoolsurvivors
