"The name is really a symbol of your identity. It's a kind of stand-in for the person, so if I'm calling your name, I'm really calling you ... so getting it right has to do with that level of respect for the person," said Karen Pennesi, a linguistic anthropologist and associate professor at Western University. https://www.cbc.ca//lon/diverse-names-namecoach-1.5814360

Big congratulations to Deborah Allotey (MA in Linguistics), winner of the Best Student Presentation at the Canadian Linguistic Association annual meeting. Her talk was entitled "Overt Pronoun Subjects of Infinitival Clauses in Gã". You can find the slides here: http://homes.chass.utoronto.ca//2020-CLA-slides-Allotey.pdf
Linguists and people interested in linguistics! I've been working with a group of Canadian linguists to produce a podcast series called Word to the Whys, in whi...ch we discuss individual topics in introductory linguistics. Our first episodes (with full transcripts) are ready for public consumption! Our target audience is students taking intro to linguistics, so if you're teaching intro, these can be a great secondary resource for your students. Feel free to link your students to the entire podcast or just to individual episodes that are relevant to your course. In the first episode, Meg Grant interviews me about phonetics, and in the second episode, Catherine Anderson interviews Bronwyn Bjorkman about morphology. More to come! We're planning episodes on syntax, semantics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and a variety of other topics, including a video podcast episode on sign languages. https://sites.google.com/view/word-to-the-whys-podcast/home
