OKAY people, here it is.....The tip of the day is whether or not you should set your thermostat colder at night and while youre out for the day VS leaving it a...t the same temp 24/7. So the biggest argument you will hear is that the things with thermal mass in your house take time to heat up. In other words, the floors and walls, your furniture, and everything else that is not AIR. The argument for consistent setpoint, or leaving it at say 21C or 72F 24/7 is that it takes SO much energy to heat everything up in the house, you might as well do it once and then allow your furnace to just maintain that temperature, as opposed to trying to warm the house back up to your comfort setpoint from your setback temperature. Unfortunately, this doesnt take into account one of the primary laws of thermodynamics. That is that the RATE of heat transfer is GREATER when the temperature difference is greater. Imagine a cup of coffee that is SCORCHING hot versus one that is only a few degrees above room temperature. The scorching hot cup cools down quicker than the one that is only a few degrees warmer than room temperature. Now think of your home- the greater the difference between outside temperature and inside temperature, the faster the heat is going to leave your home. This means that the warmer you make it in winter (or colder you make it in summer) the more often your HVAC system is going to turn on. We refer to this as cycles per hour or run time. The bottom line: The closer you make your inside temperature to outside temperature, the less your HVAC system needs to work to maintain that temperature. For homes that have high efficient heating systems in them, youve already made the biggest difference by upgrading to a new system! If you enjoy it cooler at night, go for it. If you enjoy the same temperature 24/7, thats pretty darn okay too. If you REALLY want to save your energy dollars, then give it a try! Set your thermostat back by 5-7 degrees Fahrenheit at night time and compare your next utility bill to the last one. "But what if my heating demands are different because of colder outside temps, more guests, etc, etc" Yep. All that matters too. The easiest way to test it out is by seeing how often your system turns on, and how long it runs for. The vast majority of HVAC equipment uses the same energy when its running so if your system runs less often and for less time, you spend less money. It sounds simple because it is simple. Apparently the Harrop Cable ferry has hydraulic issues and potentially some other stuff wrong as well......rumours are it could take a while to fix so we would be happy to do a service call or some annual maintenance on your HVAC system.....no travel charges people! Tip of the day: CHECK YOUR AIR FILTER! Not only will changing your air filter regularly keep your air cleaner and your family healthier, it will reduce your en...ergy consumption by allowing the airflow through your heating system to be less restricted. In the winter regular filter changes are even more important due to how we keep our houses closed up. Well over three-quarter of all service calls are not necessarily directly related to a dirty filter but have a dirty filter to be found when we get to site. The previous post is basically a transcript of the announcement we recently made on EZ-Rock. I wanted to say a few more words about this, as its something very near and dear to my heart.
