Pneumonia is said to be the leading cause of death in children worldwide. With X-ray currently being the preferred choice of diagnostic analysis, three quarters of the world’s population has limited access to this modality. A research study was conducted at the Mount Sinai Hospital comparing the efficacy of a lung ultrasound to chest x-rays in 191 children. Researchers found that there were no missed pneumonia cases or any other adverse events in the 39% of test subjects where ultrasound was deemed a suitable replacement. These findings could suggest the potential for ultrasound to become the preferred choice for the diagnosis of pneumonia in children as it is seen to be safer as there is no exposure to radiation, more cost effective and easily accessible worldwide.

Recent studies have shown that ultrasound technology could provide memory restoration in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The application of ultrasonic waves has been seen to break down beta-amyloid plaques - a group of proteins believed to accumulate between nerve cells, disrupting communication between them. Scientist's observed that the break-down of these plaques helped in the restoration of individual memory loss.

Ovarian Cancer Canada holds an annual "Walk of hope - Walk for her" to raise awareness and funding for research studies. Since founded in 2002 they have raised an astonishing $19 million nationwide. This year, Vancouver's goal is to reach $120,000, lets help them get there! Its never too late to donate.

The sound waves produced by tiny crystals within an ultrasound probe can be used to treat conditions such as tendinitis, muscle spasms as well as diseases caused by localized build up of scar tissue.
