The Varley Art Gallery of Markham is thrilled to welcome the addition of 474 artworks by F.H. Varley to its collection. This generous transfer from the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) almost doubles our holdings and offers exciting potential for display, education and research. The works are primarily on paper, sketches and drawings, and include a number of watercolour and oil sketches, as well as several sketchbooks. Together, they speak to F.H. Varley’s sketching practice over... time and will contribute to our understanding of his artistic development and career. To learn more, click here: https://bit.ly/37mVG88 Over the next couple of days, we will be sharing a few highlights from this transfer! Images: [1] F. H. Today we pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember those who have served and continue to serve during times of war, conflict and peace. . From February 1918 to August 1919, Varley was engaged to paint for the Canadian War Memorials Fund. . After the war, he returned to the battlefields of Europe for two months in 1919 to document the devastation left by the fighting. He visited, among other places, Vimy Ridge, Ypres and Camblain-l’Abbé, as well as Arras, where She...lled Buildings, France was painted. The scene depicts the ruins of the belfry of the Hotel de Ville, which Varley has rendered in broad strokes of brown and greys. . Shelled Buildings, France, 1919, Oil on panel.
