ACTION ALERT Tell the Canadian Government to put their money where their mouth is and operationalize the Canada Food Guide & Food Policy! Sending a letter to your MP only takes 1 minute: https://admin.csaeconnect.ca/preview.html?id=5666... ------------ Let's face it, when it comes to healthy eating, Canada is all talk and no action! There is a serious disconnect between what the Canadian government says we should eat, and what they fund and serve in government institutions. It's time to speak up! It's time to tell the government that we want action on the policies they created, and we won't stand by while they put industry interests above our health. ** TAKE ACTION ** The 2021 Federal budget will be decided on in January, and we need your help to send thousands of letters to MPs across Canada asking for a shift in funding away from animal agriculture, and towards operationalizing the Canada Food Guide & Food Policy for Canada. https://admin.csaeconnect.ca/preview.html?id=5666 -------------------- THE PROBLEM EXPLAINED In 2019, Canada launched the updated Food Guide, which recommends eating a mostly plant-based diet, and limiting animal-based foods due to their link to serious health problems, including cancer and heart disease - the two leading causes of death in Canada. However, unhealthy food, including known carcinogens, that the Canada Food Guide, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the World Health Organization warn against (like red and processed meat), are still being procured and served to Canadians in Federal, Provincial, and Municipal institutions (including hospitals, schools, and workplaces), and to vulnerable, low income families who might not know the risks. In 2019, the Federal Government also introduced the first ever Food Policy for Canada, with the goal of making healthy food accessible to all Canadians. The policy, however, did not address or include any of the Food Guide’s recommendations, received limited funding, and no funding was specifically allocated to implement a major aspect of the policy - to work with the provinces and territories to implement a National School Food Program. While the Canadian government continues to spend billions of taxpayers dollars every year propping up the animal agriculture industries, and making more accessible the very animal-based foods we are told makes us sick, the lack of financial commitment, and slow progress towards operationalizing the Canada Food Guide and Food Policy for Canada is putting the lives of millions of Canadians at risk. ---------------- TAKE ACTION We're asking the Canadian government to direct in the next Federal budget the necessary additional funding needed to immediately operationalize the Canada Food Guide and Food Policy, including specific funding to implement a National School Food Program. Make your voice count! Send a letter to your MP (it only takes 1 minute). https://admin.csaeconnect.ca/preview.html?id=5666 See more

Development banks are facing calls to stop funding factory farming, which is playing a significant role in existential crises facing humanity including the climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, and antibiotic resistance. Sinergia Animal points out that factory farming is responsible for significant Amazon deforestation as well as 14.5 percent of greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The dirty and inhumane condition...s in which industrially-farmed animals are kept cause tremendous animal suffering and are a major risk for the transmission of new zoonotic diseases similar to COVID-19. Another public health threat in which animal farming plays a significant role is antibiotic resistance. According to the WHO, the ‘high volume of antibiotics in food-producing animals contributes to the development of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, particularly in settings of intensive animal production’. Despite intensive animal farming being a major factor in these existential threats, money to the tune of billions of dollars has been poured into the sector by development banks. A development bank’s mission should be to support the sustainable development of a country or a region, spokesperson Carolina Galvani told Plant Based News. It does this with taxpayers’ money. Therefore, the projects, companies, and activities they finance should benefit the common good. Therefore, development banks should refrain from financing activities that hamper the achievement of the Paris Agreement goals and the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Industrial livestock is such a sector. This is due to its contribution to deforestation, GHG emissions, and pollution. And that’s not all. Other issues include zoonotic diseases, antibiotic resistance, unhealthy diets, and employees’ exposure to bad working conditions. Moreover, it also causes immense animal suffering. Development banks should support countries in developing sustainable and fair food production systems, instead of financing intensive livestock projects. But looking at projects at an individual level does not show the full picture, said Galvani. To meet the Paris Agreement’s goals and the SDGs, the world needs a radical shift in how it produces food. And it should be the role of a development bank to help countries, especially the ones from the Global South ones, to achieve this shift. https://plantbasednews.org//banks-told-stop-funding-facto/

In light of Claire Smith's groundbreaking proposal that SDG#18 - "Zero Animal Exploitation" be added as a #MissingSDG and our awareness that UN SDG#8 - "Economi...c Growth and Decent Jobs," is an infinite growth #TrojanHorseSDG that has no place on a finite planet, can we reach a consensus on replacing SDG #8 with SDG #18 and see how best to actually meet all the SDGs? Petition to the Government of Canada Whereas: -Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is establishing for-profit prison farms involving beef, dairy, and intensive animal agriculture selling to the private sector and possible export markets;... -Prisoners will be paid under a dollar per hour; Associating underpaid prison labour with the private sector is a human rights violation under International Labour Organization standards; -CSC recognizes the potential for abuse of animals in prisons and confirms that 14 bull calves have died in the first six months of this year at Collins Bay Institution under unknown circumstances; -CSC will initially acquire up to 800 goat kids in 2020; -In 2021, CSC will construct a multi-million-dollar facility at Joyceville Institution to mechanically milk thousands of goats producing 2,250 litres of milk per hour; -This federally subsidized agribusiness will be the largest goat farm in Canada, using prison labour to compete with farmers in the open market; -Beef, dairy, and intensive animal agriculture are leading contributors to the climate crisis, agricultural pollution, and zoonotic disease; and -Canadians are unwilling to bear the financial, ethical, and environmental burdens of these prison farms. We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to: 1. Cancel this prison agribusiness; 2. Prevent for-profit use of prison labour for the private sector; and 3. Transition federally funded prison farms to a plant-based, non-profit model feeding food banks and food-insecure communities, as proposed by Evolve Our Prison Farms. https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details
