Our latest permanent collection puzzle features this wintery painting by Maurice Stubbs, currently on view as part of the Winter is Coming Exhibition. Originally from Australia, Maurice Stubbs was recognized for his talent and passion for painting as a teenager. He immigrated to Canada and by 1969 became the first full-time curator of the art collection at the University of Western Ontario. Stubbs never abandoned his artistic practice. This painting demonstrates his appreciat...ion for the simplicity of the shapes that snow brings to a landscape. The location that inspired this work, Cape Croker, is located on Lake Huron and is a continual inspiration for the artist. Our latest puzzle features a work from our current exhibition, Given Her Due: Oxford County Women Artists 1880-1980, on now until October 10. Barbara Louise Palmer studied art at the Ontario College of Art, Banff School of the Fine Arts, Vancouver Art School, and Schneider School of the Fine Arts. Palmer spent several years completing fashion illustrations for newspapers. However, her ideal setting for inspiration and subject matter is the natural landscape, specifically the... scenery in between Beachville and Ingersoll, Ontario. After moving to Ingersoll she discovered her appreciation and joy for painting with watercolours while participating with the Ingersoll sketch club. She won the Prince Albert Award in 1952, and the following year was part of a traveling exhibition across Canada, put on by the Federation of Canadian Artists. The featured watercolour painting, "Beams," displays the scenery which she enjoyed capturing, as well as the watercolour style she has become known for. This watercolour scene uses the suggestion of light to create a calm surrounding, while using the colours to bring focus to the architectural detail of the structure. Artwork Credit: Barbara Louise Palmer, Canadian, (19292019), Beams, c. 1977, 76.5 x 57 cm, watercolour painting on paper, Purchased with the funds from the Art Gallery Acquisition Fund, Collection of the Woodstock Art Gallery.
