Dawud, 32, from Frat, Ethiopia, collects water from the river Lah for his family. He doesn't like his wife going because he worries something will happen to her on the way. It takes Dawud two hours to fetch the water. Luckily he hasn't fallen sick from drinking the river water, but many others have. With clean water on tap Dawud and all of Frat can claim back their time and their health, focus on their livelihoods and help their community thrive. ... https://www.wateraid.org/ca/future-on-tap WaterAid/Joey Lawrence

Our colleagues at WaterAid Madagascar continue to respond to COVID-19 by installing new sanitations blocks for students and teachers. This sanitation block, accessible to wheelchairs, is composed of urinals, handwashing stations, and will significantly improve the hygiene and health conditions of the 3,500 students and 40 teachers. The infrastructure was built with the financial support of WaterAid as part of our ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our goal is to ensur...e that people in the poorest and most marginalized communities, receive information and have the basic tools needed to protect themselves from COVID-19. Kemal, 50, came to Frat as a young boy, when it was nothing but barren land. He helped build the houses and the bridge, and fostered the strong bond between Muslims and Christians. And yet he told us: "Everybody loves to have their family around them and I’d love them to be here with me but I don’t want them to live the life I’m living here."... The lack of clean water in Frat is forcing Kemal to send his family away. You could help change this and make sure younger generations can stay and prosper. WaterAid/ Joey Lawrence

This is Chris, he's started Weyonje, a movement to champion hygiene awareness in his community - "we are a group of volunteers who promote hygiene with training and support from WaterAid. We go house-to-house to raise awareness, mainly focusing on how to build, use and empty latrines properly. We also talk about handwashing, especially after using the latrine and before handling food." In a country where a third of the population have no clean water or a basic toilet, WaterA...id and the H&M Foundation are working to create sustainable change at all levels of society. It has always been my dream to see my community transformed. And for our children to grow up in a better world. WaterAid/ Esther Ruth Mbabazi

"I started backyard gardening during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. Since we were not working, we indeed had a lot of free time at home. Together with my husband, we then agreed to try out this idea and start planting some food crops in tins and polyethene bags which many people were throwing away as garbage" says Batuuka, 25, in her backyard garden in Kampala, Uganda. Backyard gardening has provided Batuuka and her family along with other members of Weyonje - healthy vegeta...bles, which saves them money and helps them earn extra income during the pandemic. Supported by WaterAid Uganda, with founding from H&M Foundation the Weyonje group has mobilized its members, mainly women, to start backyard gardening using recycled waste. Growing food crops in our backyard garden has enabled us to save money which we would be spending on buying vegetables, WaterAid/ James Kiyimba

Those in Nicaragua already impacted by Hurricane Eta are now facing the consequences of Hurricane Iota. In the span of two weeks, Central America has been battered by two category 4 hurricanes. Both storms brought extreme winds and heavy rains that destroyed homes, infrastructure and villages. See more from our colleagues at WaterAid America.

Today is #WorldToiletDay. Have you ever thought about what a decent toilet means to you? A decent toilet improves people's health, dignity and independence. Visit our online exhibition and explore stories from Madagascar, Rwanda and the UK https://bit.ly/32Si8mJ

1 in 4 people around the world still live without a decent toilet. Think about that for a second. Canada has the opportunity to demonstrate exceptional feminist leadership in confronting the global sanitation crisis as a pathway to gender empowerment, in achieving the human right to sanitation and as part of its comprehensive climate finance package. WaterAid is calling for urgent action from the Government of Canada to increase investment in sustainable sanitation services and we encourage Canada to include ambitious sanitation targets in their climate action plans and climate finance package.

Today is #WorldToiletDay! Access to a decent toilet should be available to everyone - and it's simply not right that 2 billion people still live without one. We're calling for a decent toilet for everyone, everywhere! Anita Das, 40, is an example of how a decent toilet could bring a change in somebody’s life. Anita and her family did not have access to good hygiene and a decent toilet. Anita and her whole family used to suffer from stomach problems including diarrhea and abd...ominal pains. She did not have any idea that an unhygienic toilet was causing all those health troubles. Two years ago, WaterAid in partnership with Rupantor, built a decent toilet for Anita and her family after that their stomach problems have become rare Anita’s house. I am Anita Das. I am 40 years old and a homemaker. My life has changed significantly after the toilet was built which is just a few steps away from my house. It is clean, hygienic and has enough room for cleaning my menstrual products" Read our report https://bit.ly/3kF5sFY #WorldToiletDay WaterAid/ DRIK/ Habibul Haque

What have toilets got to do with climate change? Flood, drought & rising sea levels threaten sanitation, from toilets to septic tanks to treatment plants. Extreme weather can damage toilets and spread human waste into water supplies, food crops and people’s homes. These incidents, becoming more frequent as climate change intensifies, cause public health emergencies and degrade the environment. Strong water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems are climate resilient systems. ...Everyone must have sustainable sanitation as a human right, to withstand climate change and to keep communities healthy. WaterAid is calling for urgent action from the Government of Canada and the international community to increase investment in sustainable sanitation services. Safe, reliable, and inclusive sanitation services prevent the spread of infectious diseases and help communities withstand the impacts of climate change. Living without a safe toilet threatens the health, education and livelihoods of billions of people with women and girls experiencing the harshest realities. WaterAid is encouraging Canada to include ambitious sanitation targets in their climate action plans and climate finance package. Read our report https://bit.ly/3kF5sFY #WorldToiletDay November 19th is World Toilet Day, this day raises awareness of the 4.2 billion people living without access to safely managed sanitation.

673 million people have no choice but to defecate in the open. Living without safely managed sanitation effects the health, education & livelihoods of billions of people. Everyone, everywhere has the right to sanitation, but progress on achieving SDG6 is slow. #WorldToiletDay Let’s ramp up global efforts to achieve universal access to basic sanitation by 2030! Shabana, 25, cleans her climate-resilient toilet, Trimohoni, Bangladesh. ... "We did not have a decent toilet before. The toilet we are using right now is built with the help of Rupantor. We feel safe and healthy now. We used to have a poor pit latrine which was not suitable for women." Read our report https://bit.ly/3kF5sFY #WorldToiletDay WaterAid/ DRIK/ Habibul Haque

Living without a toilet endangers the health and livelihoods of the world’s most vulnerable people and the risk of living without proper sanitation increases as our climate changes. Now climate change is aggravating the sanitation crisis. Extreme weather floods, powerful cyclones, rising temperatures, prolonged droughts are causing irreparable damage to weak sanitation systems and causing illnesses to spread further in vulnerable communities. An estimated 250,000 addit...ional deaths per year are predicted between 2030 and 2050 due to climate change and many of these deaths will be linked to poor sanitation. WaterAid is calling for urgent action from governments and the international community to increase investment in sanitation services. Why do we talk about toilets? Because 2 billion people around the world still live without somewhere decent to go to the toilet. Ahead of #WorldToiletDay on Nov 19, remember whoever you are, wherever you are, sanitation is your human right.
