HoopOUT Owner, Colleen, began her entrepreneurial journey by attending some of the webinars at the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre. She found these webinars very valuable in building the confidence needed to start her small business. Colleen started using the Digital Service Squad over a year ago. Having just began her business, it was very helpful to have access to the checklist provided by the Digital Service Squad with what was needed to become more successful. Coll...een also appreciated that the Digital Service Squad recently reconnected with her to check on her progress and provided additional support. "It's always nice to have another person to talk to about our business tech questions. They are super resourceful!" In February 2020, things were picking up for HoopOUT with live events, bookings and shows to attend. Less than a month later when the pandemic started, Colleen believed it would be a short break to do some learning including exploring next steps for her business, website design and marketing options. Colleen quickly realized that she would have to rethink her business model or risk letting her dream go, as many others had to do. Skills that she had thought she would never consider learning have now become essential, like social media and turning to online classes. In retrospect this year has been a challenge but came with small successes, including meeting people all over the world and knowing that we are not in this alone.

Deja Vu Salon & Spa has been in business for 20 years. For the owner, Sandra Gibson, it is important to have a connection with their clients, and for them to feel welcome and relaxed in her salon/spa. Once Sandra was faced with the reality of the lock down, she made sure she was informed and researched what other businesses were doing to help keep staff and clients safe. She ordered plexiglass screens for their manicure stations and front desk area, PPE for staff, one of her... staff made cotton masks to use in the salon, and they updated their infection control protocol while they were closed. Sandra also used the time while closed to take nail art classes, online skin care classes, and was able to access webinars through the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre that were helpful, including teachings about social media platforms, how to take photos, customer engagement, and e-commerce sessions. After taking these webinars, Sandra reached out to clients through social media by creating videos and posting on How to do at home Pedicures, Facials, and Manicures". Clients were able to purchase products and tools to assist them to maintain their treatments at home, through curbside pick up and local delivery. This holiday season, Deja Vu Salon and Spa has created the Beleza box (Beleza means beauty in Portuguese - a way to embrace Sandra's heritage), a fun and festive box for clients to purchase for themselves or someone on their gift list. A little pamper at a time we all need it!

Counterpoint Brewing Company made the proactive decision to develop their e-commerce infrastructure, which made sure they stayed one step ahead when COVID-19 hit. They utilized their online retail platform to keep their customers, and themselves, safe. As a brewery, they are lucky that beer is traditionally something both enjoyed in their taproom and purchased for home consumption. Albeit, they did lose out on taproom traffic, they were fully supported by their community wh...o adapted to their new system. To help adapt and focus on this new business model, Counterpoint Brewing attended Digital Main Street webinars, peer-to-peer discussions at WRSBC, and had a personal consultation with Vaibhav, a Digital Service Squad member, who was instrumental in helping see the big picture on how to use not only the tools they were accustomed to, but all online resources.

Kasper Skinner of K Skinner Designs moved to Canada this past March, during the height of the pandemic. Having worked as a craftsman back in Ireland, Kasper was keen to bring his work to Canada, but found the task daunting. There were a lot of key differences to how things were done between the two countries. Kasper needed advice on concrete steps needed to set up a business legally and logistically in Canada, and that is where the webinars from the Small Business Centre real...ly helped. He booked a one-to-one online session with one of the Small Business Advisors, who had given the webinar. Kasper has received the guidance he needed and his questions were answered. Kasper recommends the WRSBC team to people looking to start up or grow their small business. Kasper used the time given to him from the lockdown to research, develop and prototype products which he then streamlined, costed, photographed, and advertised on the website provided by ShopHere. The Digital Main Street ShopHere team provided Kasper a tailored service, and with their help he had a functioning and professional website within a month! The ShopHere service would appeal both to those who want to design their website themselves, or to those who would rather describe their vision and have the professional team create one for them. In the few months since setting up his business, Kasper has met other like-minded individuals who are running interesting and vibrant businesses and are welcoming and supportive of newcomers starting their own ventures. Many of our customers are ordering our teas and enjoying a virtual tea party with friends or family over Zoom. I love seeing how people are using our tea parties to take their minds off the pandemic and as a way to reconnect with their social circles from a distance. I am so grateful for the community support of my business dream! Queen of Hearts Kitchener, a local coffee and tea house in Kitchener is celebrating its success in pivoting its business strategy during the C...OVID-19 pandemic. With some wise marketing and continuous support from the community, the business was able to surpass 2,100 Afternoon Teas To-Go since the beginning of lockdown. Only six months into operations, Queen of Hearts Kitchener found itself needing to completely re-think its business strategy as the province locked down businesses. Entrepreneur and owner, Alyshia Bestard, pivoted to offer Afternoon Teas by pick-up or delivery. An e-commerce website was created overnight and online orders began to flow in immediately. See more

In her previous life, Elya Style & Fashion owner, Elvira Sakara, worked as a Marketing Supervisor. When the pandemic started, it was difficult for her to take care of her kids and have meetings all day. She realized that it was too stressful to combine corporate and personal life, so she started thinking about how she could earn a living while staying home with her kids. As a mother of two young boys, Elvira knows how important it is to look chic and put-together at any given... time, and that’s how she came up with sportswear and street style outfits! If you’re heading out to pick up your kids, do a quick grocery run, or simply wanting to meet your friends for a girl's night out, Elya Style & Fashion offers quality clothing options from Italy. It was tricky for Elvira because when she launched her business and received all the clothes, she didn't know how to sell them. That’s when she reached out to Ksenia at the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre and received a consultation where she explained about the Digital Main Street ShopHere program and their support for small businesses. She started to work with the ShopHere team right away and her website was ready very quickly! "I was very surprised at the very professional team and everything was done in a timely manner. I am very appreciated for having my website done in such short period of time and for FREE. They supported me through the whole process and even after it was done." - Elvira Elvira is still growing and learning a lot, including taking courses to understand social media, but her passion for her business, doing what she loves, and being able to take care of her kids makes it all worth it! Like many businesses in our community, COVID-19 turned Authentic Video Group's world upside down. As a video production company, their primary clients were manufacturers and suppliers. All at once, their clients pulled back marketing efforts, as cost control became their primary focus. What they did to stay in business, was take their two existing services and melded them into a unique offer. They created a product that restaurants, retail outlets, fitness centres, spas and m...any other brick and mortar businesses could use to showcase themselves in an interactive and innovative way, by merging their Virtual Tours with Video. They were even able to present the 2020 Cambridge Chamber of Commerce awards using this very service (you can see the show on their website here: https://bit.ly/35P1fLN)! In 2019, Authentic Video Group completed the Digital Main Street program and received the Digital Transformation Grant. It was invaluable to them! In May and June, the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre interviewed over 100 small business owners. We heard about financial challenges caused by the pandemic, the desire to retain and support employees, the need to strengthen online presence and sales, interest in how other businesses are addressing challenges, the uncertainty of how to re-open and how to do so safely, and the emotional toll of all this. Our team offered resources and advice in an effort to support small... businesses. Now, weve compiled all those resources here. We also heard that the sheer volume of available resources is overwhelming. So, weve organized the most requested resources here in a way that we hope will help to make things a little less overwhelming.
