Here are a few more photos that arrived since the last post. Three are by James Loewen, who along with Andre Tardif is one of the great chroniclers of our community through the 80s. The other perhaps the last photo taken of Pamela, is by Ken Armich and shows her as many West End neighbours will most recently remember her, across the street from her beloved Starbucks after the lockdown, enjoying her coffee and greeting friends.

In case you missed it.... ROEDDE HOUSE MUSEUM is OPEN! Roedde House is a historical home built by Sir Francis Rattenbury (whos the architect who also designed the Vancouver Art Gallery building, Victorias Empress Hotel and BCs Legislative Buildings). Today the house is a museum in Vancouvers West End (just 3 or so blocks up from Robson Street).... After being closed for a number of weeks due to COVID-19, the museum is open to the public once again as of July 23rd. To see what to expect at the museum, check out this video. For the next little while at least, there are no live in-person guided tours (as there have been in the past). Hopefully the guided tours will return soon! In the meantime, however, visitors can still enjoy the tours via recorded commentary on their phones. If you like history, antiques and heritage buildings, youll love Roedde House! The Museum is now open with new policies and procedures to ensure people can enjoy the Museum safely. Days of operation are Thursday / Friday / Sunday from 11am-4pm with 5 guests permitted every hour. The Summer Camps and two four-week seniors programs, Chair Yoga and Arthritis Fitness, were successfully conducted out-of-doors through the summer, with participation limited by the required social distancing. Everyone who took part enjoyed the outdoor activity. Joe Fortes Librarys head librarian Jane Cu...rry advises that the branch is now open for curbside pick-up service. Visit the website at www.vpl.ca and follow the VPL Takeout link from their home page for further information. You will request the title youd like to reserve and receive an email response to make an appointment to pick your book up when its ready. Pick-up hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Anyone without computer access can call the branch at 604.665.3972 for assistance. According to West End Community Centre Association (WECCA) president Linda Johnston staff and programmers have been working with Parks Board management on re-opening plans for the Denman Street facility. As many programs as possible will return in September, with all programs probably kept in the downstairs rooms. Inspections are taking place at the Coal Harbour Community Centre and Barclay Manor, which are also managed by WECCA, and announcements about programs in those facilities will be made shortly. The licensed childcare programs will occupy their usual spaces according to Johnston, but they will probably start a little later than usual so instructors have time to become familiar with the new precautionary requirements. These will include several levels of sanitation before and after sessions. The popular fitness centre on the second floor of the Denman facility is undergoing some major upgrades and will not likely reopen until January. Check the WECCA website at www.westendcc.ca for current information. The long-dormant reader board signage in front of the Denman centre is being refurbished and is scheduled to be reinstalled on August 31. Keep an eye out for messaging there as we move into September. Stay tuned to The West End Journals Facebook page for further updates, and visit us at www.thewestendjournal.ca to subscribe to our monthly headlines newsletter. : As we head towards the October 24 provincial election, we will be posting updates here frequently, so stay tuned. So far, incumbent NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert is the only declared candidate in the West End-Coal Harbour riding. The West End Journal has reached out to Green, Liberal, BC Ecosocialists, and Conservative party organizers but we have not yet received any information about potential candidates. According to Spencer's campaign manager Chri...stina Rzepa, "It's going to be a very different kind of campaign this year, with less face to face time than we'd like". The NDP campaign will open a kiosk campaign headquarters in Denman Place Mall where folks can pick up campaign signs, and Spencer will hold a number of public zoom events. You can call his campaign at 604-690-8993 for more information. You will also see Spencer's team out in the community, in small, masked groups, talking about safe ways to vote -- which you can do right now at the Elections BC office at 747 Cardero, which just opened today. The voting is currently by write-in ballot until all candidates have been declared. Just write-in the name of the party whose candidate you wish to vote for. You can also vote by mail or during the advance polling period seven days prior to the election. As we said, stay tuned! See more

More details to follow in our September issue.

It's time for your weekly Heron Update! Only one nest remains with chicks! These three chicks likely hatched late after eggs from the parents’ first attempt failed, and they're about 2-3 weeks away from fledging. Watch them at Vancouver Park Board's Heron Cam @ vancouver.ca/heroncam... . See more
