2020 was a watershed at Western University. Yes, COVID-19 dominated the conversation but that wasn’t the only noteworthy story. Check out what else was on our... Top 10 for the year: Relationships flourish with wine and roses and a certain je ne sais quoi. This year, research led by Western professor Samantha Joel may have found the quoi commitment to making it work. The pivots COVID-19 necessitated translated into a whole new way to teach, study, work, play, celebrate and graduate at Western University. Read how we managed, together. Western University's commitment to sustainability in 2020 was far more than a (phosphate-free) laundry list of activities. They were four bright lights, on their way to Western University, when Flight PS752 was shot down. Our campus was a focal point for a community’s grief and remembrance. Investments in student mental health, active aging and nursing were among the myriad ways supporters showed faith in Western University and its people this year. We are speed, lightning speed. Western University became the first Canadian university with a 5G network in a partnership with Bell Canada that will transform data-based research. At no other time in our lives were so many researchers at Western University zeroed in on understanding, treating and solving One Big Problem. They tackled the impact of COVID-19 from all angles: medicine and health to ethics, engineering and music. The dietary habits of ancient beavers, sparrows’ responses to snowstorms and the appetites of murder hornets this was a quirky year for research on birds, bees and other creatures at Western University. Western University shone an unblinking spotlight on the scourge of racism and the shadows of colonialism and made determined strides in 2020 towards redressing both. In its first full year, Western Space explored, discovered, dreamed and became recognized as a go-to source in the search to unravel mysteries of the universe. Farewell, 2020. You were as unpredictable as you were unprecedented. We learned, we adapted, we worked together and we’re happy to see 2021 stride through the door.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, holds great significance for me. During this celebration, I gather with family and friends to eat, pray, and socialize. We wear traditional Indian attires and decorate our homes with bright colours and lights. Families exchange gifts and sweets. The whole atmosphere becomes energetic, festive and delightful. Diwali carries different meanings for everyone. For me, this celebration symbolizes optimism. When I light a ‘diya’ (small oil lamp), I... am reminded that despite hardships and challenges, my future will always be bright. I wish everyone a Happy Diwali! - Akhilesh P. Dear Western Students, With fall reading week approaching, I hope you can take some time to rest and recharge. I know these last few months have been hard.... You’ve been asked to limit your social activity, learn in new ways, avoid travelling that’s a lot of change. All of this can impact your mental health and well-being. We have supports for you and I encourage you to access our workshops, counselling and peer-to-peer supports: https://www.uwo.ca/health/ Prioritizing your physical well-being is also important. Campus Recreation continues to offer digital programming, and I’m pleased to share that a phased return for our sport and recreation activities will begin Monday, Nov. 2. More to come on this over the coming days. If you’re heading home for the break, we are asking you to limit your in-person interactions as much as possible and continue to follow health and safety protocols. The Middlesex London Health Unit continues to discourage non-essential travel to Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and the Greater Toronto Area, including Peel and York Regions. Travel outside of Canada is also strongly discouraged. If you do travel abroad, you must quarantine for 14 days upon your return and register your quarantine plan with Western in advance: https://uwo.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1Y1n6xQ6JwbFE2N If you choose not to travel, Western has a number of virtual events planned for students, and all residence dining halls will be open next week. Your efforts to take care of our community are making a difference. Please take some time next week to take care of yourself. Be safe and be well, Alan Shepard President and Vice-Chancellor
