I'm sorry to give up on the 40 Days of Devotion. They were beautiful. They are gone from my phone and I made an error downloading them to my computer so can't continue. Alas!

40 Days of Devotion: Meditations on the Names of God.

Every historical event has a backstory. In Luke the backstory involves the lives of a priest in Israel and his wife about 5 BCE and the notorious King Herod. As Zechariah the priest was serving in the Temple in Jerusalem he had an angelic visitation. The angel announced that he and his wife Elizabeth were going to have a son. Since they were past the age and had no children it was considered a miraculous event and was well noted by the neighbours. The child was to be called John. Later people called him the baptizer, His mission was to prepare the way for the Messiah, also called the Son of the Most High and the Son of God whose kingdom would never end.

I discovered that not only did the founders of these great religions have a history but their parents have names that are remembered. Moses mother was Jochebed and his father, Amram. Guru Nanak Dev was born to Mehta Kalu and Meta Tripta in Takwandi near modern Lahore. Muhammed was born in the city of Mecca. His father was Abdullah and his mother Aminah. The Buddha was born to Maha Maya and King Shuddhodana in Kapilavastu according to legend. Jesus was born to Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem in Judea his tribe’s seat. More history and geography for you.

We are entering the season where most of the world celebrates Christmas and Christians celebrate the coming of Jesus (6-4 BCE to 30 AD) as the Messiah/King /Saviour promised historically to the people we call Jews, known in ancient terms as Hebrews. Their founder was Abraham and later Moses (1400 BCE) In preparation I decided to read about Muhammed (570-632), and Guru Nanak Dev (1469-1539 CE) who founded the Sikh religion and Gautama Buddha (between 2420 and 290 BCE). I notice that all had a biography and parents and a people group to which they belonged. Sometimes I think we miss seeing Jesus as an historical person who lived in real historical time. He is as real as these other teachers. (Dates from Brittanica on line.)

Only with Covid has it been used widely in a responsive video format. If you have ever wondered what traditional Christians believe and wanted to ask questions here is a chance to connect from the security of your own space. Details are at our church website Wocc.ca

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance. (Acts 2:14, NASB95) Jewish Pentecost was on Thursday but most churches celebrate it today. John the Baptist said Jesus was the Lamb of God who would take away sins AND the one who would baptize in the Holy Spirit. We need both. Ask him for both.

10 Days to Pentecost: A Retrospect. The Apostles asked Jesus, Lord are you going to free Israel now and restore our kingdom? Jesus replied, The Father sets those dates and they are not for you to know. But when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, you will receive power and will tell people everywhere about me..... Acts 1:6-8

Three Days to Pentecost: A Retrospect. Peter and John had just healed a man in the Temple. And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all. And now, brethren, I know that you acted in ignorance, just as your rulers did also. But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, th...at His Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from ancient time. Young people needed to work with a successful Community Support Summer Initiative. West Ottawa Community Church (WOCC) is a Christian Church that emphasizes reaching the local community to provide good quality community support for families and their children, with the desire to show them the love of Jesus. WOCC is situated on Carp Road between Carp and Stittsville. We use a quality building surrounded by grass and road, where indoor and outdoor events can be scheduled. WOCC ...has been awarded the Federal Government grant for the Canadian Summer Jobs program for three positions. The funding for this Community Outreach Summer Initiative will be significant in our community support work for 2020. We are therefore looking for young people, between 15 and 30, who will bring life to WOCC through an effective and Kingdom building program. Under the constraints of COVID-19 this will have limited physical contact with the community and will follow all official health and safety regulations. Initiative and vision will make summer 2020 truly unique! Could you be one of the WOCC Summer Workers for 2020? Work to Learn; Work to Grow; Work to Lead! See the WOCC.Ca website for details. Here are the Bible passages from the sermon at WOCC this morning. Get Some Perspective. Look as far down the road as possible. Don’t get travel sickness. John 17:5 I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. (John 17:45, NASB95)...Continue reading

Day 8 Old Testament background to the Gospel: Jesus prophesies judgment. Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enter the city; because these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled. Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to ...this people; and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. (Luke 21:2124, NASB95) Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place. So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. (Daniel 9:2426, NASB95) (6th C B.C.)

Day 7 Old Testament background to the Gospel: Jesus enters Jerusalem When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them. This took place to fulfil...l what was spoken through the prophet: Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold your King is coming to you, Gentle, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats. Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road. The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest! (Matthew 21:19, NASB95) (Zechariah 9:9 520 B.C.) The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief corner stone. This is the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it. O Lord, do save, we beseech You; O Lord, we beseech You, do send prosperity! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord; We have blessed you from the house of the Lord. The Lord is God, and He has given us light; Bind the festival sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar. (Psalm 118:2227, NASB95) ( O Lord do save is Hosannah in Hebrew.)( 9-8C B.C.)

Day 5 Old Testament background to the Gospel of John: The glory of God And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John testified about Him and cried out, saying, This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. For the Law was given through Moses; grace and... truth were realized through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him. (John 1:1418, NASB95) Then Moses said, I pray You, show me Your glory! And He said, I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion. But He said, You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live! (Exodus 33:1820, NASB95)

Day 4 Old Testament background to the Gospel of John. Jesus and the Spirit John testified saying, I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’ I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God. (John 1:3234, NASB95) The... Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified. (Isaiah 61:13, NASB95) See more

Day 6 Old Testament background to the Gospel: Jericho Now when all the nation (of Israel) had finished crossing the Jordan, the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe, and command them, saying, ‘Take up for yourselves twelve stones from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet are standing firm, and carry them over with you and lay them down in the lodging place where you will... lodge tonight.’ So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe; (Joshua 4:14, NASB95) Then they came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road. When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! (Mark 10:4647, NASB95) (Jesus and the twelve disciples came down the EAST side of the Jordan away from the pilgrim route and crossed the Jordan near Jericho to follow the main road up to the city similar to Joshua’s route. Jesus is the Greek version of the Hebrew Joshua. He came not to conquer but to heal.
