It's people like the late Marion Anderson - educator, artist and historian - who help promote the importance of heritage and culture and place great value in your community museum. Thank you! WHAM received many artifact and archival donations related to the history of Waterford and area from Mrs. Anderson over the years. This week, it was officially announced that WHAM received a substantial bequest from her estate which will be used to further the museums mandate of being a vibrant public space for the community to gather, to learn, to create, to discuss, and to perform! (Pictured: WHAM camp kids presenting Mrs. Anderson with cards and flowers in celebration of her 100th birthday - 2019).

The first Remembrance Day was observed on November 11, 1931. Every November 11th since, Canadians have paused in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. Despite the pandemic, this tradition of honouring will be continued in 2020, as local legion branches host scaled back services. For our part, Norfolk County Heritage and Culture will be honouring those from Norfolk w...ho served and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Through a Virtual Sunset Service, we will remember the 405 men and one woman who lost their lives defending our freedom. At 6:30 p.m. we will post right here on our Facebook page and on YouTube a film highlighting each of Norfolk’s fallen as they are projected on the Norfolk War Memorial, Carillon Tower. They will appear in alphabetical order. While we know a virtual event can’t replace an in-person honouring, we feel we must do something and this is it. We hope you’ll tune in for this special event. #wewillrememberthem See more

It's Halloween Saturday, so that means we are sharing a new "haunted" puzzle. This photo of Waterford dates to the 1880's and includes 3 of the most haunted places in town - The Slaght Hotel where Michael Donnelly (yes, the infamous Black Donnelly's) was murdered, along with the Dr. Duncombe house and Dr. Bowlby house (where this bird's-eye view was taken from). We'll highlight these places next week - Enjoy! @DelhiTobaccoMuseum&HeritageCentre Norfolk County Heritage & Culture Waterford Heritage & Agricultural Museum Norfolk County Archives & Eva Brook Donly Museum

Today would have been the opening of the 2020 rendition of the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show. While we can't be there in person to enjoy all this annual celebration has to offer, Norfolk County Heritage and Culture will be posting all week from a historic perspective. We hope you enjoy these heritage snapshots. The history of the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show dates back to 1840 when the Talbot District Agricultural Society was first established. In 1852, the name... was changed to Norfolk County Agricultural Society. Traditionally, opening day at the fair is celebrated with Young Canada Day. Elementary and secondary school students are admitted free and enjoy a day at the fair with friends and family. Gathering at the grandstand, students participate in races, cheerleading and tug of war competitions. Their enthusiastic school spirit can be heard blocks away from the fairground. By including students in this annual agricultural celebration, the Norfolk County Agricultural Society has ensured the ongoing and sustainable success of this Norfolk County institution. It is a family tradition for many. Thank you to the many, many volunteers, members, sponsors, staff, community organizations and local businesses and attendees. You have contributed to a vital Norfolk County celebration that each October reminds us of our rural roots. How quickly can you assemble our jigsaw puzzle? This historic picture is from WHAM's collection and shows the packing of Norfolk County Apples around 1900. If you look close, one of the boxes reads "AF MISNER". Have fun! https://www.jigsawplanet.com/?rc=play&pid=00a78730107f

Museum work is varied. Tonight is evidence of that. This 1940s Maple Leaf fire truck belongs to the Waterford Heritage & Agricultural Museum. The Maple Leaf onc...e belonged to the Waterford Firefighters’ fleet. It has been in off site storage generously provided by a community member. Tonight it is being transported to a new storage facility and is receiving some maintenance beforehand including air in the tires and a bath. It will be safely stored once again until it can be restored. Thank goodness for all our volunteers. We couldn’t do what we do without you.

This would have been the second week for WHAM's highly anticipated - nearly 2 years in the making - exhibition showcasing the amazing history of Norfolk's crafted furniture. Many of the pieces that would have been on display are recognized as national treasures! With the exhibit, a revised cabinet maker book (in full colour with newly discovered treasures) was to be launched. With the recent decision to keep the county operated museums closed until at least October 1st, the big show will have to wait until 2021. Here are some detailed pics of what you can look forward to.

Did you get your Pirate on with us this morning? If so, you were a part of making history. Today’s edition of Museum Mondays Summer Adventure was our first ever... live, virtual camp program. It was a great success and we are looking forward to the next one. Participants register in advance and receive a camp kit which includes everything kids need to participate in the hour long program. Today’s pirate camp was facilitated by Captain Museum Bones aka Angela. Participants were able to interact with one another and with the program facilitator in real time. They made pirate ships, hand hooks, solved a buried treasure mystery and so much more. Our next camp adventure, Horse Power, is Monday, July 20th. Registration is open until Thursday at noon to ensure you have time to get your kit. Next week’s kits are assembled and ready to go.
