Be careful of who you hire. The dog training/walking/daycare industry is unregulated. Do your research before hiring anyone to work with your dog.
Training should not hurt. Science has shown that positive reinforcement training is the safest and most effective way to train any animal. #yaletowndogtraining #vancouverdogs #positivereinforcementtraining #puppysocialisation #dogtrainingvancouver #puppytraining #yvrdogs #dogtraining #dogbehavior #puppiesofinstagram #yaletowndogs #yaletownpuppies
We are hard at work on another course with Sarah Pennington of Yaletown Dog Training! This one will be all about teaching your dog to come when called (also kno...wn as recall). You may be wondering what this video has to do with coming when called. Well, if you look closely, you’ll see that when she gets up from her glorious roll in the grass that Hazel is no longer connected to her harness! We, unfortunately, did not realize it immediately. But, thankfully, the work we have done with her paid off in a big way! Teaching your dog to come when called is probably the most important skill you can teach her. Hazel walked right back when called and we were able to leash her right back up and carry on! Though it looks serene and secluded, we are actually right next to a busy road, so it was quite heart-stopping! Stay tuned for more info on Teach your Dog to Come When Called! In the meantime, let your dog rock and roll to her heart’s content!
Tia used to lunge and bark at the sight of another dog. It didn’t take long and Tia had fun learning to leave it when she saw a dog instead of lunging. Now Tia and her people can enjoy their walks again.
Do you live with a dog who goes a bit crazy outdoors on leash? If yes my online course "Leave It: Help for Leash Reactive Dogs" may help. It was designed to help dogs and their people enjoy their walks more. Many dogs are reactive on-leash as a result of barrier frustration. Reactive behavior can happen because they really want to say hello to other dogs, but the leash prevents them from doing so or because they want to chase something - a natural predatory behavior - and the... leash prevents them from doing that, as well. The good news is that the Leave It protocol can help in both cases! Teaching a dog to do something other than bark, lunge, pull, whine, etc. - in this case - to actually come away from the bicycle, the dog, the critter, is a great way to build more of the behavior we want to see - a dog who is able to relax and enjoy a walk. This is great news for us humans who may be embarrassed and frustrated ourselves! In the course, I walk students through the steps of the training plan, both in demonstration videos and in downloads that they can work from. I also talk about why this course isn't appropriate for dogs who have a history of fear or aggression and how to manage greetings and unexpected triggers. If you've got a dog who experiences barrier frustration on-leash, join us! You can learn more here: https://lorinanan.com/canine-courses/leash-reactive-dogs/
It was a pleasure to speak about On-Leash Reactivity at the BCSPCA Animal Behavior Science Symposium. It was also wonderful to learn from a great lineup of speakers. I look forward to next year’s conference. #ABSS
A great article on what to look for in dog training ads
Brushing your dog's teeth is very important for their overall health. Here is a link to an on-line course that shows you how to teach your dog to enjoy the process. This makes regular brushing easy and fun for both you and your dog.
Some dogs need jackets to keep them warm when outdoors. However, many become worried when being dressed. Rudi’s people want him to be warm and comfy when on walks, but he runs and hides whenever a jacket comes out. We are helping him to learn that wearing clothing is a good thing. We followed a training plan and began with a novel item, a face cloth instead of a jacket. The plan will transition to jackets later. This video shows step 5 of the training plan. Rudi is learning that if he stands while a cloth is placed on his back and fastened around his neck he will earn a tasty food reward. Rudi was not restrained when the cloth was placed on his back. This is a good way to assess comfort level. If the dog chooses to stay, he is telling you he is comfortable. Rudi did very well in this session. I was proud of him
We are proud to be one of the first dog training companies to be AnimalKind accredited. Yaletown Dog Training supports and promotes humane, science based training methods.
